McThings Sensor Kit: Connecting Everything to the Internet of Things

    McThings is a set of universal sensors and software for measuring a large number of environmental parameters (temperature, vibration, sounds, etc.) and integrating household / electrical appliances into the cloud. The entire system consists of a set of McModule sensors that wirelessly communicate with a central communicator called McRouter. McModule modules can also be connected to third-party sensors / detectors, making conventional devices “smart”.

    Sensors consume very little energy, so they work for years on a regular tablet. McRouter allows you to connect sensors to the Network (the maximum number of McModule available with which the switch works - 250 pieces), making integration with IFTTT, Facebook, Twitter, SMS, Email and other services available.

    You can control the central device, McRouter, from your iPhone, Android smartphone, PC or Mac.

    There is another device in the kit - McPlug. This is a smart socket that allows you to control the two sockets of the socket. You can remotely control the power consumption of devices connected to the mains via McPlug.

    Objective of the project

    Developers believe that in our time, any device, whether it's a garage door or a refrigerator, should be part of the Internet of things, and there should be the ability to control your home remotely.

    Thanks to the central communication device, all these gadgets and home devices can be integrated with services like Facebook, Twitter, SMS Email, Google+, WeMo.

    The developers also claim that the entire system is already configured, and the user will not need to write their own programs, the software has already been worked out.

    Varieties and features of McThings sensors

    McModule allows you to work with third-party sensors / detectors via UART, I2C or SPI.

    The variety of sensors / capabilities is quite large:

    • Temperature: Temperature detection is available for all McModules. The sensor can be used in the refrigerator, inside the car, on the window, in the garage, etc .;
    • Accelerometer: also available in all McModules. Allows you to determine the knock on the door, moving things, falling, vibration of household appliances;
    • Time: all McModules can keep track of time, so any sensor can record any event in time, whether it is opening the refrigerator or knocking on the door;

    In addition, McModules allows any third-party sensor / detector to be made wireless by connecting the device to the network. For instance:

    • Humidity detector: the sensor allows you to determine the flooding of the house / apartment, the humidity level outside the house, on the site, etc .;
    • Biometric sensors. Integrated sensors that can detect the presence of methane, carbon monoxide, dust. In addition, fingerprint sensors can be used, for example.
    • Light sensors.

    McModules can send alerts about all events to any mobile phone, to the owner’s account in any social network / e-mail.

    Among other things, McRouter keeps an event log, information is available in csv format:

    Measurements are easy to import into excel from a CSV file

    Main functions

    • Developers offer the following options for using their system:
    • Measurement and logging of temperature dynamics in the house, in refrigerators, in the car, outside the house;
    • Comparison of temperature at various points, calibration of the cooling system at home / office, energy saving;
    • Measuring the temperature of the heating system / mustard water in the basement without the need to go down there;
    • Sending a message (tweet, SMS, email) in case the temperature of the same heating system drops to a certain level, or when the refrigerator starts to heat up suddenly;
    • Activity tracker for a pet;
    • Remote control;
    • Turning on lighting outside the house remotely;
    • Notification of the presence of an unauthorized person in the house / apartment;
    • Measurement of soil moisture, sending a notification if plants require watering;
    • Weather station management;
    • Lighting control in the house.

    Of course, these are only the basic proposals, all this can be combined, add your own functions and modify existing ones.

    In general, the McThings system can be truly universal, with its help the whole house can be made smart enough, and household appliances can be “introduced” to the Internet of things.

    Module Dimensions

    The developers made the modules small enough. Their size is 29 * 17 mm. The battery is supplied, its thickness is 4.6 mm (in fact, this is a standard battery, which can be replaced without problems).

    Price and order

    The price of the kit is lower if you make a pre-order. Then a set of 1 McRouter and 1 McModule will cost $ 73.

    A set of 1 McRouter and 3 McModule will cost $ 110.

    A set of 1 McRouter and 3 McModule + McPlug will cost $ 140 already.

    For $ 150 you can get a set of 1 McRouter and 5 McModule. The

    maximum set costs $ 480, and includes 1 McRouter and 25 McModules.

    You can pre-order the developer . In addition, for Russia, you can leave a request for notification of the receipt of the system at the warehouse at Medgadgets.
