Onda V975 - a tablet with a 9.7-inch Retina screen

Already, modern tablets and smartphones over the standard set of software have caught up with full-fledged desktop computers and laptops. The processors of portable devices allow you to enjoy excellent graphics in games. Progress in this regard actually caught up with computer graphics of the 2005-2006 level. The resolution of the screens installed on the top Android tablets and iPad is higher than that of most laptops and monitors sold now, although they have a 1.5-3 times larger diagonal.

So, such a portable device that came to me for a test is a representative of the category of tablets with high definition screen. Onda V975 is in the middle price category, equipped with a quad-core processor and a display with a clarity of 264 PPI.

    ▌PACKING AND PACKAGING

The tablet is packed in a plain white box, on the front side of which you can see its appearance, some features are listed nearby. Small print on the side shows the technical specifications. The package is minimalistic: only the tablet itself and the charger. Which is quite logical for a mid-range device. The power supply is as much as 2.5 A. In addition to the charger and tablet, there is a standard set of leaflets. A headset or OTG cable is not provided with the device.

    ▌ DESIGN, DIMENSIONS, CONTROL ELEMENTS

Externally, the tablet is an almost complete copy of the recently released iPad Air. On the front panel there is a touch screen framed by a white frame and a front camera. There is no light sensor. The back cover is completely made of gray aluminum, it has the company logo and model name. The tablet pleases the handles with a pleasant aluminum chill, and the rounded edges fit perfectly in the palm of your hand. Weight is relatively small - 560 grams. In the body of the rear panel, a peephole of the main 5 MP camera is also equipped. The connectors and buttons are located as follows. On the right side is the volume rocker. On the same side is the connector for the microSD card.

All major ports are located on the top of the device. These are: 3.5 mm headphone jack, HDMI, microUSB port, microphone hole and power button. The buttons are pressed nicely, with a slight effort and almost silently. There are no buttons or connectors on the opposite panel. However, the conclusions of stereo speakers are arranged here. In general, the design of the Onda V975 should be evaluated positively: the tablet is quite light and thin, the aluminum case is pleasant to the touch, there are all the necessary connectors, including Micro-USB with support for OTG and Micro-HDMI, as well as a microSD slot.

    ▌ DISPLAY

Onda V975 is equipped with an IPS display with a practically maximum matrix resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels. Screens with this resolution are installed on the latest iPad models. The picture looks juicy and bright. The backlight is only manually adjustable. With viewing angles both vertically and horizontally, everything is fine. The coating of the display is arranged on the same level with the sides of the edging.

    ▌CAMERAS

The Onda V975 tablet has two cameras: front (2 megapixels) and rear (5 megapixels). The front camera is designed for video communication. The quality of photos from the rear camera is average. But the video quality is just pretty good. Despite not the highest resolution of the rear camera when taking photos, it can shoot video in Full HD.

    ▌ SOFTWARE PLATFORM

Many Chinese companies often began to refuse in their launchers a separate main application menu. There is simply a set of desktops that scroll in a circle. You can create any folders, there are no restrictions. Onda V975 out of the box runs on the operating system Android 4.2.2. But now an update is available to version Android 4.4.2. The firmware is still in beta testing, so I conducted the main tablet tests on the current software. There seems to be no fundamental changes, but according to the developer, they increased productivity, optimized the interface and reduced power consumption.

2 GB of memory is allowed to be used to install applications and a little more than 10 GB for other needs. It is possible to install microSD memory cards. Unfortunately, out of 1 GB of RAM, only 580 MB are available to us. Multi-touch supports 10 touches at the same time. Plus, it is worth noting the presence of a browser with Flash support. This is important because everyone’s favorite Chrome doesn’t support Adobe Flash, unlike the Browser. Therefore, if you suddenly need to go to a flash site or watch a flash movie, the browser will help you out. The Wi-Fi module works well, at a distance of 4 meters and obstacles in the form of a brick wall, the signal remains stable. GPS and Bluetooth are missing.

The gallery, calculator, voice recorder and other standard applications here are completely identical to those used in standard Android. The interface in the settings is slightly changed and new icons are added, otherwise there is no customization.

    ▌ TESTING IN BENCHMARKS

In AnTuTu Benchmark, the tablet scored a good result: 19045 points. 3DMark GPU test. Results for three modes: Ice Storm, Ice Storm Extreme, Ice Storm Unlimited. The GPUBench graphics test produced the following results. The power of the processor and the graphics accelerator for the screen with a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels is of course not enough. Sometimes there are slight slowdowns in the browser and the picture moves with some twitching on long pages with a lot of graphic elements and animations. The tablet easily copes with playing Full HD videos and 3D games. There are no brakes or jerks during operation of the interface.

    ▌ GAMES

A large screen resolution of course also requires more performance when starting games. But most hardware-demanding games go without problems on the tablet. Various arcades, like Angry Birds, Cut The Rope look beautiful and work flawlessly. In games, I did not see any sorties.

    ▌BATTERY, CHARGING, OPERATION TIME

The device has a built-in battery capacity of 8500 mAh. Charging can be carried out both from a complete charger issuing 5V and 2.5A, and through a microUSB connector. Benchmark Antutu Tester, loading the tablet's CPU to 100%, was able to discharge the battery in about five hours. If we talk about everyday use (typing, Wi-Fi on, maximum brightness, average volume), then in 3 hours the tablet was discharged by 25%. Accordingly, depending on the load, it can last from one day to a week. In any case, it should be enough for 5-6 pairs at the institute. Well, in the video viewing mode at full brightness and volume, the tablet will sit down after 4-5 hours.
