New Evernote for iOS 7

The release of iOS 7 is a significant event for application developers. We spent several months studying the smallest details, design and user interaction with the new operating system. iOS 7 inspired us to carefully work on our application, and we liked the result.

    Clear interface

While working on the application for iOS 7, we started by removing all the elements that were unnecessary in our senses.

    Home screen
In the case of the home screen in Evernote for iOS 7, we were able to more efficiently use the available space. Getting rid of the tabs and shadows of previous versions, we were able to show almost everything on one screen: personal and business notes, notebooks, tags, as well as shortcuts and news.

The notes section shows the last two notes that you worked with - this allows you to quickly return to them if necessary. A similar approach is implemented with business notes, tags, and notebooks. To save even more space, the home screen dynamically shows or hides sections you don’t need. For example, if you do not have tags, then you will not see the corresponding block.

    Quick Notes The
new Evernote is fully focused on quick work. At the bottom of the home screen is a set of note-taking features. There you can quickly start a new note, take a picture, create a reminder or to-do list. With this panel you can go to work on the main types of notes with one touch.

We also implemented another frequently requested feature: when you open the note editor, the cursor and the on-screen keyboard immediately appear. So we got rid of one extra step.

    Marks on Images and PDF

Functions for quickly making graphic notes from our Skitch application appeared in Evernote, but in an improved form. Now you can add a shape, text or arrows on top of any image in your notes. Just click on the image and then on the edit icon to see all the functionality. There will be tools and the choice of color, and it will be enough for you to choose the necessary opportunity.

    Premium Feature: PDF Markup
If you are a premium user, then you also have the opportunity to make notes in PDF documents that are stored in your notes. When viewing a PDF in Evernote and seeing a fragment of a document that is worth noting, just click on the edit icon to go to the toolbar. Users of free accounts got trial access to this function within 30 days, so you can safely open the scanned document and check how everything works.

We appreciate these opportunities because they allow you to give visual feedback and comments on layouts or documents right on the go, for example, quickly noting the changes in the contract.

    Notebooks and tags

Notebook and label screens have also been enhanced in this version.

    Notebooks
If you click on the notebooks section on the home screen, a list of personal and business notebooks with the number of notes in each of them will open. By clicking on the edit button, you can subscribe to reminders in any of the notebooks and enable notifications of these reminders by email. This will help you keep track of, for example, updates on work projects.

    Tags
The tags section also has a convenient new feature. Scrolling through the list, you will notice that popular tags are highlighted in a darker color. This allows you to quickly navigate the list and go to the desired label.

    Send notes via AirDrop

AirDrop allows you to share information with people around you, and now you can use this feature to send notes. In any note, just click on the send icon and select AirDrop. You will see people who have AirDrop activated. Select one or more of them and send a note.

    Background Sync

Another very important feature has appeared in this update. For the first time on iOS, Evernote will update the contents of your account, even if the application is running in the background. Forget about waiting for synchronization to complete. This feature is especially significant in two situations:
    • if you use offline notebooks (premium feature);
    • if you work with Evernote on multiple platforms and devices.

    Novelty

Changes may seem unusual at first glance, but believe me, they are worth it. We hope that while mastering the new iOS 7, you will devote some time to the new Evernote.
