Nokia Lumia: the smartphone that survived

The stamina of our phones has served as the basis for hundreds of memes and myths. It is enough to recall the legendary Nokia 3310, which was not equipped with special protection, but at the same time had a huge margin of safety and earned a reputation of a truly indestructible.

The following models also did not hit the dirt: Nokia 1600 was found inside the fish and continued to work, and Nokia 3720 Classic managed to stay in touch even after freezing in jelly .

We have already talked about numerous innovations at Nokia Lumia, but something has remained unchanged throughout the company's history - traditional build quality and reliability. It is not surprising that from time to time we hear stories about crashes and other troubles, from which our smartphones come out with dignity.

    Destruction tests

What did the observers not do, trying to break the Nokia Lumia 920.

    They dropped it:

They cut it with a knife, scratched it with keys and beat it with a hammer:

We moved by car and even played baseball:

The 900th model even hammered nails:

Attention! We do not recommend repeating such experiments with your device.

But all this is extreme tests, the purpose of which was to break the phone.
It is clear that in ordinary life, the load on the phone will be significantly lower.

    User stories

My Lumia 900 survived, falling three times a week for six months and hitting the pool twice, then I bought the Lumia 820.

    image
Dropped my 920th, going down the concrete stairs. 2.5-3 meters in height. Scuffs in the speaker area, the screen was not damaged.

    image
By accident, I forgot the smartphone in the car, the temperature was around -7 degrees. Samsung’s tablet was too cold to turn on, and the phone felt great.

It is worth noting that in Russia, as in Finland, in winter the temperature sometimes reaches -20 degrees, but smartphones continue to work as if nothing had happened.

    image
A 2-year-old daughter dropped the Lumia 920 into the toilet. At first I panicked, but then I dried it with a hairdryer and the phone works like new.

And here, for example, is a story that hit the press:

According to the Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat, builder Ossi Piikonen, managing a 24-ton bulldozer in his quarry, lost his Nokia Lumia. Fortunately, colleagues found the loss under a half-meter layer of earth. The device was literally trampled inland by a massive car. The screen, unfortunately, crashed during the incident, but the phone remained fully operational.

Surely you also have similar stories, we will be glad to hear them in the comments.

In the meantime, let's see what makes the Nokia Lumia 920 so resistant to external influences.

    Screen

The screens of many models from the Lumia line are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass, thanks to which smartphones withstand visible losses in their pocket with keys, falling onto a hard surface and even falling under a car.

Such properties are achieved by chemical treatment (ion exchange), during which the sodium ions in the material are replaced by potassium ions. By the way, Gorilla Glass is used not only in the manufacture of electronics, but also in the automotive industry, in the manufacture of household appliances, in construction.

Of course, there is no completely unbreakable glass, and even Gorila Glass can be broken if desired, but this will require considerable effort. But now you can forget about the protective film. In addition, a special film will not survive the game of Fruit Ninja with a knife. Unlike Gorilla Glass .

    Polycarbonate housing

All electronic components of the Lumia 920 (and a number of other models of the Lumia line) are housed in a monolithic polycarbonate housing. The same material is used, for example, in the production of protective equipment for hockey players, cyclists, motorcyclists, representatives of other power and extreme sports.

Polycarbonate has high strength and toughness (250-500 kJ / m2), which is why our smartphones are slightly susceptible to damage from falling and shock.

In addition, the components that make up polycarbonate allow us to achieve excellent color intensities. This opens up new possibilities for working with color, smartphones are very bright. They do not get their color after molding the body, but even before casting. The material is stained in bulk - and this makes small scratches almost imperceptible. The paint does not peel off and the phones retain their excellent appearance for longer.

This is how the same Lumia 920 of our colleague looks after six months of use without a case and after an uncountable number of falls.

Even a chip from another meeting with asphalt is not striking.
