Firefox 15 supports Opus free audio format

In Firefox 15 (Beta) implemented support for free audio format of Opus . This codec has recently been accepted for consideration by the IETF as a standard ; it is superior in quality to any other coding and sound transmission standards.

Opus has a unique combination of high quality and low latency.

All existing audio codecs can be divided into two groups: General-purpose codecs

    (large delays, high quality)
    • MP3
    • AAC (all types)
    • Vorbis

Speech coding (low quality, small delays)
    • G.729
    • AMR-NB
    • AMR-WB (G.722.2)
    • Speex
    • iSAC
    • iLBC
    • G.722.1 (all options)
    • G.719

None of the above codecs has the flexibility to support any kind of audio encoding, both in maximum quality and with low latency.

    Tests confirm:
At 64 kbps, Opus sounds better than HE-AAC or Vorbis
At 64 kbps Opus sounds like 96 kbps MP3

Opus is also well suited for broadcasting music at 6 kbps and 256 kbit / s, while on a wide band Opus provides compression “without hearing loss” of quality. The codec can dynamically switch to compression with a different bit rate, depending on changes in bandwidth conditions.

In tests, Opus proved to be the best codec for speech compression, that is, it is ideal not only for high-quality VoIP, but also for audio books and podcasts.

An Opus audio file is integrated into the web page code in the same way as other audio files: via a tag
