Bitcoin, Friday, thirteen ...

Last Friday, July 13 (which is very consistent with the overall dramatic nature of the situation) , a message appeared from Amir Taaki that in Bitcoinnik , where after two thefts the process of payments to the victims only gradually began, another, the third in a row, serious hack occurred .
Only for this hack, without taking into account the previous ones, 40 thousand BTC were stolen (which at today's rate corresponds to 332 thousand US dollars).

The details of the hack were quite trivial. Broke what was not yet broken. The person hiding under the pseudonym Tihan (and, it seems, one of the former co-owners of Bitcoiniki) decided to use the MtGox API key as a password for the notorious LastPass website. The username was also easy to find out - info@bitcoinica.com. It did not occur to Bitcoinnik operators to change the password to LastPass, because everyone thought it was secure, and moreover, LastPass was used by new operators to securely transfer passwords.

This oversight led to the loss of one third of all Bitcoin money. The lost amounts of US dollars and BTC are the daily limits of the MtGox exchange. It’s easy to calculate the total amount of money Bitcoinniki has on his MtGox account: 120 thousand US dollars and 120 thousand BTC (almost a million US dollars at the current exchange rate!). Accordingly, payments to all affected users are cut by 30%.

Another interesting fact: after the sale of Bitcoin, Zhou Tong received a salary of $ 8,000 US dollars per month for part-time work to support Bitcoin, and Tihan directly supported the site.

And the last time it all started because the source codes of Bitcoin were “leaked” to the network, and, of course, they contained the MtGox API key.

It is worth noting that in the light of such events, many merchants migrate from exchanger \ exchange-veterans to new sites. For example, on icbit.se previously unprecedented bursts of activity of visitors and traders are noted.
