WEXLER. Flex ONE: the first review of the world's first flexible screen e-book reader

The other day on Habré published a post LG begins to release flexible displays . I will talk about the first book in the world with such a display.

    WEXLER. Flex one

What is especially nice - this book was released by a Russian company.

At my disposal was a test copy, production is already underway. An official press release will appear next week. I will share my impressions of this device.

Many reviews begin with the unpacking process. Honestly, I don’t understand the pleasure of contemplating the details of each stage, I think that the photos of the device in the case will be enough.

At WEXLER. Flex ONE is an unusual form factor: a thin screen with significant thickening on one side.
In this thickening is hidden all the electronic filling: processor, battery, buttons, connectors, etc.

The photographs show that I got a copy of a glamorous pink color. But they promised that the first batch to go on sale would be with a black backdrop. In general, the issue with the colors of the buildings is not simple. On the one hand, Ford’s arguments that the car can be of any color if the color is black do not satisfy the consumer anymore. Color choice, on the other hand, is a headache for marketers and buyers. What scale to choose, how many products you need to order in black, white, pale green and gray-bluish case, so that they still do not hang in stock? Usually I am indifferent to multi-colored devices, but I bought the last “soap box”, guided by color, to choose from dozens of devices similar in functionality and price. But back to the book.

The book’s screen really bends. I did not try to bend strongly, my parents taught me to handle equipment and other people's things with care.

Of course, there is a temptation to bend the device harder. As far as I know, during the development process, several copies died the death of the brave, and the motherboard, not the screen, could not stand it.

As I already wrote, screens for WEXLER. Flex ONE is made by LG. With the exception of flexibility, these are already familiar screens made using e-ink technology. The contrast is very good, I won’t say how many percent of whiteness, I’ll just attach the picture with the MAXIM magazine.

Functionality is quite standard for modern e-books. The supported formats are txt, htm, pdf, epub, doc, djvu, fb2, fb2.zip, for sure the list is not limited to this.

It’s convenient to hold the book in your hands, thanks to the thickening. Screen orientation can be changed.

The design of the buttons is somewhat unusual, they form a single whole with the case, speaking above it. At first I thought it would be uncomfortable, but most likely this is a matter of habit.

Of the connectors on the e-book only microUSB, it serves for charging and for communication with a PC. Personally, I welcome such a decision, tired of getting confused in exercises and, especially, carrying them with me.

I will not talk about settings, font selection, inversion mode and time setting, everything is pretty standard there.

Specifications will be announced in an official press release. I’ll say that the e-book turned out to be very interesting.

If you have questions, ask, I will try to answer. I hope the Wexler staff connects.

Thanks for attention. I hope that I was able to talk about the main features of the new e-book. There are no analogues in the world yet.

PS Soon the director of the Wexler company will appear on Habré, he will personally be able to answer questions, and will also tell more about the e-book, development and production.

PPS Thanks to this post on Habré Wexler appeared. Therefore, all questions can be asked directly to company representatives.

PPPS Since I didn’t set out to establish and describe the benefits, but simply told about my impressions, I will quote Wexler from the comments as an answer to the most important question “What gives a flexible screen to the reader?”:
    1) Weight reduction. The book turned out to be the lightest in the world market,
    2) Reduction of thickness. The book was the thinnest in the world market,
    3) Shock resistance. The book is not afraid of falls, bumps and other minor mechanical influences.
