Seagate buys Samsung HDD

Now, Seagate’s acquisition of Samsung’s South Korean-based hard drive division can be considered closed. This deal became known back in April of this year. All issues have been resolved, and soon the Samsung HDD will begin to work as a unit of another company. All antitrust authorities in Europe, China and Australia have already approved this deal. The purchase price is quite high, almost one and a half billion dollars (1.4 billion).

Under the deal, Seagate will receive almost all of Samsung HDD’s assets, including most businesses, technologies, patents, and employees. In general, it’s a really big deal that changes quite a lot of influence in the hard drive sector. It is also reported that several senior managers of Samsung who previously worked in Samsung HDD are moving to Seagate.

Now in this whole barrel of honey, which can be considered the assets of Samsung HDD, a fly in the ointment has appeared. Or rather, problematic enterprises affected by the floods in Thailand. About it on Habré wrote more than once. Hard drives have now risen significantly in price because of scarce goods. What can be done, it happens. But Seagate is not discouraged, and is going to continue active work to create new models of hard drives based on the acquired assets of Samsung.

Some representatives of the HDD lineup, previously manufactured by Samsung, will continue to be produced under the South Korean brand. But this situation will not last long, about a year. All this is necessary so that customers are slightly accustomed to the fact that Samsung HDD is now owned by Seagate, and become "followers" of the new manufacturer.
