DARPA Creates Image Analysis System

Some time ago, a topic appeared on Habré that such a large player in the IT market like Google acquired PittPatt, intending to use its results to recognize objects in images. True, some time before, Eric Schmidt made an unambiguous statement that his company, although it has all the technical capabilities to accomplish this task, nevertheless, due to problems with the legal use of its capabilities, Google will not use it in its products yet and technology.

Apparently DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency - an agency of advanced defense research projects), being an agency of the US Department of Defense, will not have such problems as the search giant. A few days ago it became known that the organization at the origins of creating the Internet and the BSD version of UNIX intends to create Visual Media Reasoning (VMR) software, the purpose of which is to study photographs, recognize objects on them and catalog them on one or another basis. The development will be handled by the I2O division, specializing in information monitoring and control systems, high-performance computing technology, data mining, and pattern recognition system.

An interesting fact is that development is a matter of a very real and fairly near future. The first prototype of the system will be completed by the end of August and the testing process will begin. Moreover, the seriousness of DARPA’s intentions and the quality of the product created by the agency can hardly be questioned, given its more than rich experience working on such more than fundamental projects as ARPANET or (and) the TCP-IP protocol stack.
