New Dingux Console - R480

The Dingoo A320 pocket game console, warmly received by enthusiasts over the past two years, has not received a logical continuation. Competitors Products Shenzhen Dingoo Digital Co. they impress with individual elements, but do not create the final value for geeks that the original A320 possesses - the ability to install a Linux-based operating system. Such an option adds +5 to karma to any piece of iron!

It is possible that soon everything will change for the better ... A preliminary review of the prototype of the new “Russian-Chinese” R480 console, published yesterday on a320.emulate.su website, stirred up the masses. I offer the readers of Habra an extended version of this material and encourage active discussion of what they saw in the comments.

Analysis of the test sample is not possible, therefore, all conclusions are based on indirect data, knowledge of the hardware of other Chinese gadgets and commonplace intuition. The Russian customer company (whose name is not intentionally called) is also not eager to share the exact specification of the console, fearing the invisible hand of the Chinese market.

Key points that are obvious from the resulting device samples:
    • dimensions 180x80x12 mm., the case is made of soft-touch plastic
    • screen resolution of at least 480 × 272 (widescreen)
    • screen quality in terms of viewing angles is better than that of Dingoo A320 / A330 screens
    • R480 does not have Native OS, the underlying operating system is Dingux
    • The R480 runs on the same or a fully compatible processor as the Dingoo A320 and Dingoo A330 (Ingenic JZ4755 or later)
    • old applications for Dingux run fine on the new console without any modification
    • More RAM than Dingoo A320 (64Mb or more)
    • 4 GB of internal flash memory
    • console has no wireless interfaces, respectively, no multiplayer
    • 720p MKV video could not be viewed
    • Russian is visible in PDF, also visible in text files encoded in UTF8. There is no way to check MP3 tags in Cyrillic, since when playing in, only the file name is displayed. There are no problems directly with the file names in Russian.
    • Battery life has not been tested. It feels like no less than the original Dingoo A320 (4-6 hours)
A few details from communicating with the company preparing the device for market entry:
    • the cost in the retail networks of the Russian Federation at the time of the start of sales will be ~ 3000 rubles.
    • the expected start of sales of R480 in Russia - September 2011
    • promised public SDK
Other working emulators from Dingux which are checked:
    • PSX4ALL [PS1] (already on the console, optimized by developers)
    • Unreal Speccy Portable [ZX Spectrum] (the official version for Dingux from the authors of the emulator is installed)
A complete list of consoles that is emulated “from the factory” from the main menu: CAPCOM System 1 / System 2, Neo Geo, Game Boy, Gameboy Color, Game Boy Advance, Super Nintendo, Sega Megadrive, Sega Master System, Sega Game Gear.

During the video, the G-Sensor option is mentioned. For those who don’t know, it’s a position sensor in space. It has been implemented in the GPH Caanoo for a year now, which sets it apart from handheld devices for the better and gives new impressions to the impressions of classic games. The first readers of the review expressed distrust of the Russian product and even suggested strengthening the Russian idea in naming the console. The options are BBCH-480 and PIRS R480 (PIRS is a personal / portable infotainment system).

In order to stop these speculations - in black and white: the console is produced in China, at similar production facilities (where other consoles are). Russian is only the order of specific consumer properties.

One of the readers of the original review ( ratiboralien ) expressed interesting thoughts about what he saw in the video:

Most likely, the Ingenic JZ4755 is actually used in the console, today the JZ4760 processors and its modification JZ4760B are relevant. This approach immediately opens up prospects for USB-host in the console, overclocking up to 800 MHz and support for resolutions up to 800x480. Unfortunately, the selected resolution (480x272), although larger than the original A320, introduces hardware acceleration into the stupor, which can be used (disproportionate scale).

All the data that could be identified is preliminary. Final console specifications will be available only at the time of sale. While the test sample R480 is in our hands, we are waiting for your questions, wishes and suggestions. What will be beyond our capabilities - with enthusiasm we will convey to the developers.
