Radically redesigned Evernote 4 for iPhone and iPod Touch

    image

We launched Evernote for iPhone the same day that Apple opened the iTunes App Store. During these two years we have gained a lot of experience and understood how to make the application really great. It became clear that users want faster access to notes, a simplified process for creating notes, an improved viewing mode, and more ways to find what they are looking for. In other words, completing tasks should be as simple as possible.

Armed with these observations, we reviewed every aspect of the Evernote and iPhone. It seems to us that you will like what happened with us. Try downloading Evernote 4 on the App Store right now .

New home screen and mixed view mode

The first thing you will notice is a joint area for viewing and creating notes on the updated application home screen. A list of your notes is now displayed in mixed view. This mode allows you to fit maximum information in a fairly limited space.

If it is only a text note, the application will show its title and a couple of lines of text. If the note contains only the image, we will take part of the image and show it in full width. When it comes to a note that has both text and other types of content, the title, part of the text, and thumbnail of the note will be shown. Such an approach will allow you to get more information about a note at a glance than before, and in many cases even do without opening it.

    New note creation screen

Large buttons in full screen at the entrance to the application are a thing of the past. We moved them to the multi-function screen for creating a new note. When you click on the button with a big plus, the screen is divided into two parts. In the upper half is a standard text input field. The set of “tile” buttons below allows you to attach pictures and photographs to a note, record 90 minutes of audio, indicate its notepad for a new note, assign labels, and even explicitly set the geographic location of the note on the map. Now you can attach several photos and audio recordings to one note at once. So, if you are sitting at a meeting or lecture, you can make text notes, record the voice of a partner or lecturer, and photograph the whiteboard / slides of the presentation in a single note.

To create an audio note (this is one of our favorite innovations in the interface), click on the Voice tile to start recording, then press again to stop it and attach the recorded sound file to the note. By clicking on the tile again, you will start recording again, and upon completion it will be added to the note as another attached file.

    Deleting attachments
To delete an attachment, click the paperclip icon. The note attachment screen opens. To delete, click on the "Change" button, and then on the red circle. You can also use the standard “strikeout” gesture by swiping your finger horizontally along the entire line.

Selecting multiple pictures from a photo album at once
When adding images from the device’s photo album, you can select several pictures at once for adding to one note or create a separate note for each picture. To select multiple notes, click on the arrow in the lower left corner of the Camera Roll screen. In this case, if there are no already attached files and text in the note, when you select several photos, two buttons will appear: “One note” and “Several notes”. When you click on the last one, several notes will be created at once, and in that notebook and with the set of labels that you selected in advance in the note creation window.

    Specify notepad, tags, and location
The top row of tiles allows you to select a notebook and set labels, and the Location tile will help you check automatically defined coordinates and correct them if necessary (by moving a pin to the desired location on the map) or remove coordinates from a note.

    View by notebook or tag

This is a significant innovation. Many users have requested the ability to view the contents of a single notebook. Now she is. Options for navigating notebooks and tags are located in the tabs of the bottom panel. Just select the notepad or tag for which notes you would like to view.

    View notes content

You probably also had a feeling when you are trying to remember something, it just spins in your tongue, but it doesn’t work out in any way. The new note view mode will take care of this. Having opened the list of notes, click on the icon in the form of four squares in the upper right corner of the screen. The content collections displayed on the screen concern only the current list of notes, so if you are viewing a specific notebook, you will be shown content exclusively from the notes contained in it.

    • View Images: This view mode displays all images from all notes. Just click on the desired picture to open the corresponding note.
    • View attachments: This mode shows a list of all attached files (excluding images) contained in notes.
    • View map: This mode shows a map with “pins” in the places where the notes were taken (if the geographical coordinates are indicated in them). Click on the compass icon to move on the map to your current location).

    Search

The search has its own screen. This is done in order to make convenient access to the search history and saved queries. The function to create and edit saved queries is available in Evernote clients for Mac and Windows.

Reminder about offline notes and notebooks

As always, Evernote for iPhone supports offline notes and notebooks. If you use the free service, then any note that you create, view or add to Favorites on your iPhone earlier will be available without the Internet (access to the Favorites can be obtained from the notebook menu). Holders of Evernote premium subscriptions can independently specify notebooks, the data of which should be stored on the device - this feature is available in the application settings. By the way, you can purchase a premium account directly from the application!
