Nokia and Microsoft: Why?

How did it all start?

As soon as Stephen Elop left Microsoft to become the first non-Finnish head of Nokia, people of course thought that the two companies would work together. “Collaborate” is perhaps not the word to describe their relationship now. Yes, of course, everyone suggested some changes. These changes could well be the exchange of specialists, the development of the Nokia Booklet line, and in the end would they make a couple of Windows Mobile smartphones! However, the worst fears have become reality ... The words of Stephen Elop and Steve Ballmer that Microsoft and Nokia enter into "Strategic cooperation", which means that Windows will become the main operating system on all Nokia smartphones. And later, after some platform adjustments, on ordinary Nokia phones.

Congratulations to Microsoft.

Well, Microsoft grabbed a big slice of the smartphone market pie. Having captivated the desktop PC market with their products, they decided to take up the mobile PC market. Microsoft's market share of mobile operating systems is declining from year to year. In April 2009, this share was 25%, a year later it dropped to 12%. Now their share is about 3% (in some sources 5%). On October 11, 2010, Microsoft decided to “close the bench” under the name Windows Mobile by renaming it Windows Phone. The decision was quite ambitious. At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft provided details on the Windows Phone 7 Series, which is integrated with Xbox Live and Zune. The Metro interface was pretty and moreover convenient. Yes, this is very good, a new interface, a new platform, but something is missing, do not you think? Exactly, not enough devices on this platform. No, I do not argue that HTC is a progressive, competitive player in the smartphone market, but they can never get to the level of Nokia. Therefore, there are several ways out. First thing; arrange a total advertising campaign for your product and thereby attract manufacturing giants to your camp. Second; Launch your revolutionary device on the market like Apple did. Third; Spend a lot of money on cooperation, marketing, “sweet presents” for another major producer. The choice, in my opinion, was obvious to them. What did Microsoft get? Of course, there are enormous opportunities for implementing your system on the devices of a company that has vast experience, great opportunities and of course the largest number of customers around the world. Nokia ... Connecting People

What did Nokia get in this “strategic partnership”? And actually nothing significant. Of course, everyone understands that Nokia did not just take it and began to cooperate with Microsoft. Without large sums there definitely could not have done. But Nokia had something that could continue to generate large returns without Microsoft investments. These are their Symbian, Maemo and MeeGo systems. And most importantly, they had and have a name. The name of the company that makes really good devices. Yes, there are many competitors such as Google and Apple. But Nokia annually releases more and more innovative new products, take the same N8 with its Symbian ^ 3. In the end, Nokia decided that Symbian is certainly good, but there is Microsoft, Windows. So why do we strain !? We will buy a ready-made solution, since there is money. Which they did.

Facts

Nokia has lost their promising OVI Store in favor of the Marketplace. Then, of course, Symbian is in favor of Windows Phone 7. Converting the MeeGo OS to the category of experimental ones. Microsoft, in turn, gained access to the OVI Maps cartographic resources, and installed them as main cards on all of its services. Promoting your Bing search engine, this means that on all future Nokia smartphones, the Bing search service will be the default. Integration of Microsoft adCenter in all future devices. Nokia's billion-dollar earnings for every copy of Windows Phone.

Summary

Due to the fact that Symbian will no longer be, thousands of employees of Nokia offices left their jobs, because the system on which they worked for almost 10 years will disappear from the mobile OS market in a few years. Starting from April 1, 2011, Nokia will coordinate changes in about 8,000 people. will be restructured into new areas of development, refinement and adaptation of Microsoft products. However, no one knows what exactly will happen in April 2011, because not everyone will agree to develop products with which they were previously not familiar and had no idea about their structure. One thing is for sure - the only company that doesn’t lose anything here is Microsoft, for it is a great opportunity to enter a huge market that they have been trying to conquer for many years.
