Mobile communication on board

In addition to today's note on femtocells , I would also like to note one significant decision of the State Commission on Radio Frequencies (SCRF), directly related to the implementation of femtocells from operators, and more specifically, the decision to allocate frequencies 1710-1785 and 1805-1880 MHz for the organization of GSM cellular networks on board airliners of Russian companies. In addition, GKRCH allowed the use of radio frequencies 1710-1785 MHz and 1805-1880 MHz for GSM cellular communications on board Russian ships, as well as radio frequencies 63-64 GHz for electronic means of intelligent transport systems.

Technically, in-flight cellular communications will be provided by low-power base stations (femtocells) connected to the aircraft / liner satellite communications system.

However, there are some limitations: the cellular communication system should not cause interference to terrestrial radio services. Therefore, the use of mobile passengers will be allowed only at an altitude of more than three thousand meters, otherwise the connection will be automatically disconnected. This warning is also necessary for safety reasons - it is necessary to exclude the influence of mobile phones in the most critical phases of flight - during takeoff and landing for airliners.
