Choosing a zone for your domain

    In connection with the problems with the delegation of geographical domains, I would like to say a few words about a reasonable approach to choosing a domain zone in which it makes sense to register a domain for your site.

    The material does not contain revelations, is aimed at beginning webmasters and organizes information about popular domain zones.

    What to think about when registering a domain

    If you are starting a more or less serious, responsible project and choosing a domain for it, the first thing to think about is: who will belong to this domain ?

    The issue of domain ownership makes sense only for those zones for which domain registration money is taken from you. All free domains drop out immediately, because:
    • They, as a rule, do not belong to anyone, including you;
    • You can’t control their performance in any way (including renewal or transfer from hosting to hosting);
    • If the domain is inoperative, you will not be able to make claims to anyone: firstly, is it explicitly indicated in the rules for using domains in any free zone, and secondly, what claims can be discussed if you did not pay money to anyone?

    Thus, it is strongly discouraged to base serious, responsible Internet projects on domains:
    • GENERIC (.ORG.RU, .PP.RU, .AC.RU, .EDU.RU, .INT.RU, which are provided by RosNIIROS );
    • GEOGRAPHICAL (.SPB.RU, .MSK.RU, etc., provided by Relcom. DS LLC );
    • Others (.narod.ru, .ucoz.ru, etc., provided by various free hosting services).

    In paid zones, too, is not so simple. It is important to know who and how governs your domain ownership . In particular, the ICANN organization that administers such common and popular domain zones as .COM , .NET , .ORG , .BIZ , .INFO (the so-called gTLDs ) is outside the jurisdiction of the legal field of the Russian Federation and does not know anything, for example, about Russian legal entities. You will not be able to register a .COM domain and have a guarantee that it is the property of your company or government agency that you represent. And .EU domains, for example, they can be registered at all only for a citizen of the European Union, while they are actively offered for registration for Russian citizens - for shell companies that are residents of the European Union. It is clear that there is no and cannot be any confidence in the ownership of a domain.

    A similar situation with the national domains of other states (the so-called ccTLDs ) is .US , .TV , .WS , etc., which are administered by an organization called IANA .

    In addition, there are cases where domains gTLD and ccTLD were peremptory order razdelegirovany of complaint received (abuse), and to restore functionality required considerable time se resources are a lot of nerves.

    It’s too early to think about the .РФ domain : the Runet is technically not ready to use such domains, and it is not yet clear when it will be ready.

    But among the national domains stand out .RU and .SU domains .
    The coordination center for the national domain to which IANA has been entrusted with the administration of the .RU zone , in its regulations clearly describes all the legal and technical aspects of the possession, disposal and use of .RU domains . For the .SU domain, the same degree of clarity was introduced by the documents of the Internet Development Fund .

    After the change of the administration regulations made by the Coordination Center on August 15, 2009 and canceling the minimum cost of registering a .RU domain for an end customer, .RU domains began to be offered for registration at absolutely affordable prices, or even completely free (when buying a hosting). At the same time, .SU domains are still expensive, and there is no tendency to reduce their price.

    The last factor to keep in mind when choosing the zone of your future domain is the “attitude” of search engines to it in the process of website promotion . I won’t tell you America, telling you a fact: if your project is being promoted in Russia and for a Russian audience, do not hesitate to register a .RU domain.

    Summary

    The "hit parade" of domain zones in descending order of the comfort of their use:
    1. ccTLD
    2. .SU
    3. .COM / .NET / .ORG etc.
    4. .TW / .US / .TV, etc.
    5. .ORG.RU / .COM.RU / .EDU.RU, etc.
    6. .SPB.RU / .MSK.RU / .NNOV.RU, etc.
    7. .UCOZ.RU and others
    8. .RF *

    To put it even shorter: you definitely will not have problems if you use ccTLD domains for your projects .
