Results of the past seminar on open source software in Irkutsk

So, the seminar “Free about free. Familiarity with Linux and free software "ended. Enough time has passed so that everyone who wants to say something about the seminar has time to do it. It was nice that there were many such people. As always, there are those who liked and those who considered it a waste of time. It is interesting to read all the opinions, each of them in its own way valuable to the organizers.

To summarize, we, the organizers themselves, and at the same time tell how everything was, with which, in fact, we will begin.

The day began quite early, despite the fact that this is Saturday, there were many things to do. We needed to have time to bring equipment, prepare an assembly hall, make a network for distributing repositories and distributions, and ensure the operation of presentation equipment. We were allowed into the hall only an hour before the seminar itself, so everything had to be done extremely quickly and in an organized manner. Thanks to all Lugovites for coming and helping. Everyone found a lesson. To arrange chairs, bring tables for organizing workplaces, draw up a network, put up a screen, set up a projector and a large amount of equipment to work on this network, someone even had to make friends with sound equipment, and when you see this for the first time, it’s quite difficult, but Our newly made sound engineer did not let us down. The projector turned out to be particularly harmful equipment,

Already at half an hour guests began to come, by this time much had already been done, at least there was a lot to sit down to, the guests were welcomed back in the hall of the first floor and asked them the right direction. There were a lot of people interested in Free software, the number of guests was close to hundreds of two, but there was enough space for everyone. A large number of visitors immediately rushed to the tables to which the network was laid, where they downloaded free software distributions and updated their systems. But the speed of all these pleasures was not very good, it’s worth considering the number of people who want to get a new distribution kit or upgrade for free, the information was downloaded in 5 streams, even a gigabit switch could not save.

I had to linger a bit with the start of the seminar, just a few minutes, well, this is a common practice for our country, and, as they say, small technical problems. The first speech was a welcome speech by the president of the Linux Operating System Users Non-Profit Partnership. Then, as usual, speakers spoke. The first part of the seminar was devoted to free software in general. Of course, not all reports were equally interesting and accessible, but we will definitely fix this in the future, although we should not write off the excitement, not everyone will be able to masterfully deal with it and read their report without hesitation. Also, the problem was rehearsal, we simply had nowhere to do it. Next time, the speakers will prepare better, we promise. However, even this fact did not prevent the listeners from becoming interested in the topics of the reports. They eagerly asked questions and even periodically helped with answers. Of particular interest was the 1 C program and its compatibility with Linux, a discussion even began on this topic. The listeners were also interested in the issue of the legal status of open source software in Russia, and everyone came to the conclusion that if this is not prohibited, then why permission is needed. However, later we still clarified this issue with lawyers and even found several documents about software licenses, which are now available on our website. After the first part, a short break was organized, where visitors simply surged into the technical sector of the hall. There everyone received distributions and consultations. The Ubuntu 9.10 OS was especially popular, as it was distributed over 80 disks with the Ubuntu 9.10 distribution kit, many asked to write the image to their flash drives, OpenSUSE, Debian, AltLinux also eagerly diverged from flash drives, and at the same time training video and films about Linux and STR. Our technical experts even struggled to cope with such a stream of people who wanted to, so it was decided in the near future to arrange distribution of distributions, on prior orders, which will also be announced in advance.

Considering that the seminar was timed to coincide with the release of the new Ubuntu 9.10 OS, the second part of the seminar was completely devoted to the Ubuntu operating system, it was told about its settings, graphical interfaces, as well as advantages and disadvantages. The second part was somewhat shorter, and, taking into account the problems encountered with the dispenser (for some reason, he refused to warm us with water, he had to run with kettles), the remaining guests were invited, without distracting the entire audience and speakers, to go to the table in small groups and drink aromatic coffee and treat yourself to buns and sweets. Many especially remember this part of our seminar. Also during the break distribution of distributions and answers to questions to our experts continued, and at the same time, those who wanted could buy t-shirts with the symbols of the event. Charged with the atmosphere of the event,

The third part was devoted to our organization, that is, LUG 'in Irkutsk, its legal status, why it was created, how to join it and on what terms.

In the future, it is planned to regularly hold such events, as well as all kinds of InstallFest, Linux and IT-party.

Thanks to all those who did not refuse to help us, who got up early on Saturday morning to come and create a working environment, those who supported us until the very end and kept order, who helped to get out at the very end, and of course without gratitude to our sponsors also nowhere. Thanks to Business Network Irkutsk for financial assistance and to Irkutsk State University for assistance in organizing.
