How I raised my site traffic

The Car Sales project was written in 2007 on flights (Ruby-on-Rails).
Then I was still in my 3rd year, I didn’t know about REST and a bunch of all sorts of gimmicks, in short the project was written a little trash. Now we are rewriting it little by little and will soon launch it with a new design.

At first, the project was in hibernation for half a year - attendance did not exceed even 100 unique ones.
We tried to include context on Google - it gave 150-200, the site came to life a little. But, after the scholarship ended, AutoLogo again went off to sleep for as long as 3 months.

In September 2008, they exceeded 100 and confidently climbed to 200. But since such statistics did not warm the soul, and there wasn’t much time, they left the project to the mercy of fate. Sometimes they looked in, peed ... In January, a confident 250-weave was obtained, sometimes it reached 300-hundred!

In February, I accidentally found tags on the meta.ua maps with traffic police cameras. An idea came up. Google, found the IGO file of these cameras, about 800 pieces. I placed them all on my map, used the Mapia.ua API, since I worked there at that time. Posted on three forums posts about cameras, left links. What happened:
    • first day - 680
    • second day - 5400
    • third day - 4350
    • ...

Schedule of visits for the whole time:

As you can see on the chart, at first there was a camera boom, since the info is interesting and new, moreover, I made sure that users add cameras themselves, could vote for the veracity of their presence in this place and leave comments like for all objects , and individually. A month later, we reached exactly 1,500 unique students a day, then 1,000, now it keeps at 650-800. Last month we completely calmed down - they wrote a diploma for the university.

Now the main traffic comes from search engines (we were well discussed at all automotive forums). In general, everything turned out spontaneously and very well influenced the future development of the resource as an automobile portal .

But there were problems. At first, the server collapsed from such a load, the administrator was dumb to call because they owed him a year of using the hosting. Then, when they scraped some money, they began to steal the idea from us, and even worse, the added objects were on our resource. And these are such large portals as autocentre.ua , zavodi.ua and mapia.ua .
Most offensively for mapia.ua , after I left there to develop my personal projects, they took without any shame all 800 of the original and 500 tags added by users. He asked me to put a link to the source - I received the most severe frostbitten answer " We placed them in test mode, just to see how they look on the map . "

Here it is. Do not judge strictly, I'm just starting to write posts. I usually write Ruby code.
If you like it, I will write more :)
