Ubuntu will run Android applications

Now in Barcelona there is an active discussion of the future release of Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. And it was announced that Ubuntu will run applications for Android.

To run, the Android Execution Environment will be used , which will not just be a phone emulator (as in the SDK), but will launch each application in its own separate chroot environment. The main difficulties are that there is no X in Android, so you need to write a call translator (or just wrap it over java functions). Ubuntu will also support installing apps in the Android APK format.

As we already know, Android is ported to netbooks in all, so that they can be done on ARM processors (which significantly increases battery life), so soon there will be not only phone-specific applications in the Android Market. Ubuntu is also striving for this market (also supporting ARM) and support for android applications will be very beneficial.

I’ll add that this is a good example of the flexibility of developing Free Software (which Eric Raymond wrote about in the book The Cathedral and the Bazaar ). Android, created by Google, is expanding to a completely different platform, and Ubuntu will support programs from a completely different platform.
