The new version of XMIND is now available in open source!

Once, along with one of the issues of the CHIP magazine, I received the annual license of the wonderful XMind 2008 program, thus becoming the lucky owner of, in my opinion, the best environment for creating / editing intelligence cards and brainstorming .

Today, a letter came to my soap, in which it was a question of a new version of this wonderful program. It turned out that the company had a complete rebranding, and in addition, it had long released versions of its utility for Linux, Mac and Windows, providing it in several variations: Open Source, Eclipse plugin, Pro and even Portable!

Unlike the previous version, the new XMind offers, as already mentioned above, many options for the distribution, thereby covering the most popular platforms. For people who are actively developing an idea, project or concept, a portable version may come in handy, which, according to the developers, will work from a USB flash drive in Windows, Mac OS, and Linux 32/64 bit.

The developers also focused on the Web 2.0 component of their product and now the cards can be uploaded to the XMind website (the Pro version even offers private sharing).

Here is a list of features from the official site:

    • Creation of intelligence cards (in different sources called original mindmap or mental cards)
    • Creation of fish skeleton maps (they are also a diagram of causes and effects)
    • Creation of spreadsheets - placement of data in the form of a table
    • Assignment to nodes of mental maps, arbitrary graphic markers (icons) from a standard or own set
    • Create notes for maps and sites with the ability to format RichText
    • Insert hyperlinks in map elements
    • Representation of any map node as the central theme of the diagram, minimizing and expanding map sub-elements
    • Spellchecking
    • Mental map legend generation and element filtering
    • Ability to import maps of the format of other popular Freemind and MindManager packages
    • Export to HTML / PNG / GIF / JPEG / BMP
    • Download to share.xmind.net and then share it anywhere

As you can see, the list is very, very worthy, as for a product that has become free. And for people with large and possibly professional needs, the paid version offers many more nice little baubles, such as export to PDF / doc / Powerpoint / MindManager, search for topics and images from the network, create snapshots of all or part of the map, private sharing, comparison maps, special elements for task lists, a large number of high-quality icons / markers / graphics, the ability to save created styles and themes.

In general, both in the free and professional versions, the program justifies, and sometimes exceeds all the expectations of users, which can be people of completely different professions and “castes” :) from the head of the enterprise, business analyst or project manager, to the housewife making the list products or holiday menu menu.

You can download the latest version here (simple registration is required)

UPD2: As the topic turned out to be more or less relevant, I’ll give links to online services that work with mental maps, they will suddenly be useful to someone :) Logos are clickable: Use your health, organize thoughts, visualize information and bring your ideas to life!
