Running KDE 4 under Win
I decided to put myself, to taste it, see the result in the pictures yourself.
There is an option to start the installation immediately from the network, but after several unsuccessful experiments, I decided to play it safe and select the Download Only mode first and then the local installation.
So let's get started:
Stage One - Download
First we need the kde installer for wines. As the developers write:
- Go to http://www.winkde.org/pub/kde/ports/win32/installer/
- Download the latest version of the installer and save it to disk, for example in C: \ KDE4
The Microsoft Visual C ++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) libraries are also needed.
Next, we need to download the components:

After that, we are offered to select the directory where to install KDE, and then the mode in which to install.
Because we need unstable version 4.1.96, then select

Unstable - because the plasma shell is not finished yet, and it cannot be attributed to stable.
Then they suggest choosing a path - where to put the files

and choosing the type of network connection. Then the server - from which to load packets. I settled on German, with it I had the highest download speed.

After that, the installer loads the package lists and offers to select the version.

And then the packages themselves.

After the list of dependencies and downloads, it will give a window on completion of work.

Next, go to stage 2 - installation
We run the installer again and select the local installation mode, uncheck it.

We select if it asks the folder where the packages were downloaded, select.

Tick off the downloaded packages. We

agree with the dependencies, wait, click the finish.
Stage 3 - Launch
We register the variables according to the manual on the site.

Trying to run something:
Try starting some Qt application in the bin folder, for example linguist.exe.
If it works, try starting any KDE application, such as kwrite.exe.
If everything is ok, then try to run the plasma. For some reason, for me, just a launch led to APPCRASH, but as a shell everything started.
We head towards HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon \ shell and change explorer.exe to% path to \ bin \ plasma.exe%
After rebooting, you should get something like the following:

P.S. since it’s still being tested, glitches can be very diverse, and fully as a shell, so far kde-win cannot be used.
P.P.S. The above actions may not match yours. Responsibility for the performance of your OS - only you.
P.P.P.S. Empirically , it turned out that winkde.org - contains an adequate version and 4.2 Stable.
