Instead of Firefox 3.1, Firefox 3.5 will be released

    On March 4, at the next Firefox / Gecko Delivery Meeting , dedicated, in particular, to the release of the next stable version of Mozilla Firefox 3.1 (code-named Shiretoko) , a proposal was announced to increase the version number of this release to 3.5 .
    The proposal was accepted, which was announced on March 6 .

    The reason for the solution was a significant number of changes and innovations in the new version of the browser:
    • new JavaScript engine TraceMonkey;
    • support for the < video> tag from the HTML 5 specification;
    • Improved control over the safety of personal information (a new mode for viewing Web pages Private Browsing, like what is available in IE8 and Safari 4);
    • Significant improvements in the display of web pages.
    It is also possible to include in the new version support for the < audio> tag and new CSS3 selectors.

    The next beta, which is scheduled for release on March 12th, will still be at 3.1b3, but the fourth will be at 3.5b4. The browser engine version will remain unchanged (Gecko 1.9.1).

    It seems to me that this decision was also influenced by the upcoming release of IE8 and the unexpected release of the Safari 4 beta. Now, probably, the Mozillovites decided if they didn’t release a new version of Firefox, then at least introduce a significant update.

    As a result, the release of Shiretoko is delayed even more, but if this pause is used to introduce in the next version some of the innovations that have appeared recently in Chrome, IE and Safari, then I’m for it.

    PS
    By the way, as Harvey Anderson, Mozilla’s chief consultant , said in a blog post back in January, Yandex will use Yandex instead of Google in the Russian version of Firefox starting with the next release.
