What we have is a unipolar electric motor.

The first unipolar motor, the Barlow wheel, was created by Peter Barlow, describing it in his book “The Study of Magnetic Attractions,” published in 1824.

Barlow wheel consisted of two copper gears located on the same axis. As a result of the interaction of the current passing through the wheels with a magnetic field of permanent magnets, the wheels rotate.

Barlow found out that when changing contacts or the position of the magnetic poles, the direction of rotation of the wheels changes.
