Blocking ads on sites using FireFox

Advertising is good. This is an engine of progress, a way to make money for the author of the site, and sometimes an opportunity for visitors to find some interesting product for them.
But when there is a lot of advertising, it’s already bad and you have to fight it.

Recently, too many advertisements have appeared on several sites that interest me, and I decided - that's enough. It's time to fight her.
For the last half a year, FireFox has become my main browser, so I decided to get puzzled with the help of blocking ads.

The first stage is quite simple and obvious - installing the AdBlock Plus 1.0 plugin .
This plugin allows you to block the loading of external page elements (scripts, frames, pictures, ...) by URL.
Once added to the blacklist the mask “ad.adriver.ru” and that’s all - you won’t see ads from AdRiver anymore.

And everything would be fine, but some services are very familiar with this method of blocking and place information elements (pictures that are part of the design) and advertising in the same address space. A living example of such a service is WEB mail from mail.ru, with the help of AdBlock it is possible to block only part of the advertisement.

This is where the second stage begins - the dynamic replacement of content within the page.
A short search for plugins brought me to a wonderful plugin - FoxReplace 0.9.0 .

On the one hand, the capabilities of this plugin may seem insanely small ... but I have enough.
For example, to remove the top ad unit on win.mail.ru I used the setting:
    1. Hide the top banner block:
    site: | http: //win.mail.ru/*
    search:

    replace:

    2. We prohibit loading data into this block:
    site: | http: //win.mail.ru/*
    search:
replace: do not enter anything here

ps Naturally, you do not need to block all ads - this can negatively affect the purse of the site’s author, which , in the end, can affect the quality of site content. But here it makes sense to block interfering ads on monsters such as mail.ru.

pps On a hub, fortunately, the advertisement is made quite intelligently and does not interfere with the work. Therefore, I didn’t block it at home, let the authors and I get a pretty penny in my budget and make the site even better :)
