Microsoft released robot programming software

Microsoft today released the final version of software designed to create software filling robots and various robotic mechanisms - Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio 2008 (Microsoft RDS 2008). This set of software has actually grown from a pilot project developed in the bowels of the corporation for more than five years.

Microsoft RDS 2008 includes a special software model for creating asynchronous applications, as well as a set of visual and simulation tools that are useful in the process of creating software for robots. Along with the kit for Microsoft RDS 2008 comes a set of documentation and sample source codes.

Microsoft RDS 2008 is the third major release of Robotics Developer Studio. The corporation says that previous versions of this environment are used in many research centers, universities and commercial companies. During the preparation of Microsoft RDS 2008, users downloaded over 250,000 copies, more than 60 companies applied for the commercial use of RDS 2008.

Among the innovations that the environment received, Microsoft distinguishes several:

First, in Microsoft RDS 2008, the code compilation system was revised, due to which the performance of the resulting applications grows by 1.5-3 times for managed code and 2 times for services. In addition, developers can now specify more specific program messages that connect services, reduce network load and optimize data processing.

Secondly, dramatic changes have been made to the Visual Programming Language (VPL). The intuitive language built into the application now includes new methods for defining and configuring applications, which allows them to be deployed faster.

Third, useful additions have been made to the Visual Simulation Environment (VSE) tool. VSE now includes the ability to record and replay simulations. In addition, developers can conduct simulations in various virtual environments - in a closed environment, open space or city. In addition, VSE was able to export from various CAD programs, such as SolidWorks 3D.

In addition, the corporation says that the RDS 2008 system is fully compatible with Visual Studio 2005 and 2008.

The software is distributed in three versions: Standart Edition for professional developers, Academic Edition for educational institutions and Express Edition for individual developers. The cost of the first version is $ 500. The academic version is distributed under special conditions for accounting institutions, and Express Edition can be downloaded free of charge from the Microsoft website.
