The following is a translation of a survey of the study “Social Media and Awareness of US Companies, Implementation and Use: A Study of Companies from the Inc. List 500 ”

Social media enters the world of American business and does it much faster than many initially expected.

In early 2007, a study was published of how companies from the Inc. list 500 ”(the list of fastest growing organizations in the USA) introduce social media. Almost a year later, the same companies were again investigated for changes in their attitude to the issue. The 2008 study asked the same set of questions as in 2007 regarding major social media (blogs, podcasts, online videos, social networks, and wikis).

Statistics from this study show that social media breaks into the world of American business at high speeds. Over the past 12 months, awareness of companies from Inc. 500 ”about social media, and the use of these communication channels has doubled.

In 2007, the list of companies “Inc.” was used. 500 ”for the year 2006. The first study (2007) found that companies from Inc. 500 ”outperforms more traditional Fortune 500 companies in their use of social media. For example, at that time, 8% of Fortune 500 companies used blogs, and from Inc. 500 ”- 19%. A year later, only 11.6% of Fortune 500 companies have a blog from Inc. 500 ”39% of companies are engaged in blogging. Accordingly, the growth was 3.6% and 20%.

Like the first study, the current one is the result of a nationwide telephone survey of companies from Inc. 500. " The survey was conducted from March to April 2008. The study involved 42% of the companies (209) from the list of “Inc. 500 ”, as a result of which the statistical error of the data is ± 5%. The companies that participated in the study vary in scope, size, and location. These include 3 representatives of the top 10, 11 organizations from the top 25 and 44 firms from the top 100 of the list of “Inc. 500. "
In the first question, company representatives were asked to rank their awareness of each of the presented forms of social media on a scale from "a very good acquaintance with the issue" to "complete ignorance of the subject." In 2007, the largest number of companies from Inc. had the greatest awareness of social networks. 500 ”(42%), in 2008 this indicator increased to 57%.

After awareness of the research question, the use of social media by companies was studied. As in 2007, organizations were asked if they use these 6 forms of social media, and if so, for how long. It turned out that even the most unfamiliar tool is used by 21% of firms (podcasts).

When interviewing respondents for awareness of the importance of social media, researchers received a response from 26% of those who took part “social media play a great role in terms of marketing strategy” in 2007. This figure rose to 44% in just a year!
