Today is August Starfall

One of the most beautiful phenomena in astronomy can be observed on August 12-13, when the Earth passes through the Perseid meteor shower, which appears annually from the Perseus constellation, resulting from the passage of the Earth through the plume of Swift-Tuttle comet. Dust particles flying out of the comet's nucleus fly into the Earth’s atmosphere and burn out.

In 2008, this phenomenon can be observed from August 10 to 13, it is at this time that the peak of the flow occurs. On the European territory of Russia, the starfall will be visible on the evening of August 12. It will be possible to fully enjoy the summer show only with a rather dark sky and far from cities, whose light, hiding a significant part of meteorites, makes the spectacle quite pale. Astronomers are advised to leave telescopes and binoculars at home, they will only interfere with the review.

Presumably, during the "maximum" of the August starfall, it is possible to see 50-60 meteors, but you should not really hope for this. It is known that in recent years, the meteor shower activity has significantly decreased. So back in the 90s of the 20th century, it was a real “star rain”, when at least 100 meteors could be counted in an hour.

During the year, inhabitants of the Earth can observe starfalls twice - in August (Perseids) and in November (Leonids). Despite the fact that the stars are the same, the “summer” is considered more vivid.
