A large number of applications that process multimedia receive a description of the content information from the metadata. The machine "understanding" of the metadata coming from the multimedia file is unconditional, but the problem with semantics sometimes occurs when distributed multimedia systems are working. W3C Multimedia Semantics XG works to solve these problems in several ways.
  • W3C Multimedia Semantics XG published a report showing the benefits of using semantic web languages and technologies for creating, storing, managing, sharing and processing image metadata * and more generally for different types of media ** . Both cases contain presentation options that show problems when combining several metadata standards. They explain how the use of web semantic languages improves compatibility and provides numerous conversions of existing standards to OWL / RDF, as well as instructions for using semantic web languages to annotate multimedia content.
  • In addition, the group maintains an appropriate list of multimedia metadata standards, as well as RDF / OWL ontologies representing them *** . A list of publicly available multimedia metadata processing tools is also provided.
  • Finally, given the special status of MPEG - 7, the last document published by the group presents various "ontologization" of the MPEG - 7 **** format .

Multimedia Semantics XG would like to continue its work in the framework of the new W3C XG (to be created), and the connection of its results with the industry.
