A laptop. Selection and installation of the OS.

The first question that arose after buying a laptop (Lenovo R61i): which Linux distribution to put there? (The fact that Vista will be removed without a trace was taken for granted).

I didn’t have to choose for a particularly long time - at about the same time a new release of the Ubuntu distribution was released, which I really wanted to feel, and the previous releases of this distribution left quite good impressions.

The installation went without any problems, the disk was divided according to its old habit:
    • / boot - 256Mb
    • swap - 1Gb
    • / - 20Gb
    • / home - all remaining space

Out of the box, absolutely all equipment was detected, including trackpoint, WiFi adapter, Bluetooth adapter, sound, video and various tricky combinations of keyboard buttons (turning on / off Bluetooth, adjusting the volume and brightness of the screen). Moreover, which is nice, all this without the use of any “proprietary” drivers.

There were also no problems with the suspend and hibernate modes - the laptop successfully falls asleep and wakes up.

The distribution kit contains everything you need for efficient power management. From the repository, you can deliver the wonderful powertop utility, which can help fine-tune your system to extend battery life.

Of the small amenities, I want to note a darkening of the screen and a decrease in brightness to a minimum with prolonged inactivity by the user.

If you turn off all the "decorations" like the three-dimensional effects of the window manager, then in the "typewriter" mode the laptop runs for 2.5-3 hours.

Connection to various networks (wired and not so), thanks to NetworkManager, is easy and easy.

In general, my verdict is that Ubuntu stays on my laptop for a long time. :)

If someone has questions regarding the use of Ubuntu 8.04 and Linux in general on a laptop, I invite you to comment :)

Well, for fun, I’ll give a screen with updated widgets in the style of Mac OS X:
