Science Publishers Do Not Accept Word 2007 Manuscripts

Two popular scientific journals, Nature and Science, no longer accept manuscripts in Word 2007 format.

The rules for authors of Science and Nature magazine say that changes to Word 2007 are not compatible with internal workflow automation. The .docx file received on the output is not accepted by these logs either for review or editing. Authors will need to convert this format to compatible with Word 2003, or Word 2004 for Mac before sending it to the publisher.

Science also notes that even though converting Word 2007 files to old formats, formulas will not be displayed, because the formula editor in Word 2007 is not compatible with MathML- Specification of XML formatting of mathematical symbols and formulas. To avoid confusion, Science suggests using either the Math Type formula editor or the formula editor from previous versions of Microsoft Word.
