Portal Mail.Ru has planned an unusual promotion: the red-haired dachshund, symbolizing the company, will be sent to the International Space Station (ISS) as the first animal space tourist. The action is scheduled for April 2010.
The total duration of the flight will be ten days. The flight to the International Space Station and return to Earth on the Soyuz spacecraft will take about two days, another eight days the shaggy “space tourist” will spend in orbit.
The future astronaut does not exist yet: the optimal age of the animal for space flight is one and a half years, so the birth of a traveler is expected only in the fall of 2008. The puppy's cultivation, as well as its pre-flight training, will be handled by nursery trainers together with representatives of the Cosmonaut Training Center. Yuri Gagarin, already having experience in preparing for the flight not only people but also animals. The nickname for the astronaut dog was preselected: most likely, it will receive the name "Soap".
