Analogs OLPC laptops appear on store shelves during the year
As Michael Wang, the president of Quanta Computer , who is currently assembling laptops for the OLPC project, said in an interview with Financial Times journalists , the accumulated experience will allow them to start production of an analogue computer for children this year or next year. This analogue, having not much higher price than OLPC XO ($ 200 against $ 150), will be freely available to everyone in retail.
Wang runs one of Taiwan's largest electronics OEMs and believes he knows when and at what price the market will be ready to accept devices like OLPC's. According to him, several customers of the company have already expressed their desire to produce such gadgets under their brand. Specific names are not named, but it is known that brands such as HP, Dell and Acer are actively working with Quanta.
Let me remind you that Dell has already begundevelopment of the budget PC market by releasing a model for China at a price of $ 335. Wang claims that in the near future, this trend will capture many other manufacturers, and the “ultra-low-cost” computer from Quanta will greatly contribute to this. According to some analysts, due to sales of such PCs in both developing and developed countries, the entire market can grow by 10%.
Wang made a special emphasis on attention to consumers in rich countries, among whom, from the very start of the OLPC program, there were many who wanted to buy such a simple, but very cheap computer. And it's not just about geeks. In these countries there are also a lot of poor people who will be happy to join modern technology at an affordable price.
