ICANN will clean registrars
ICANN is preparing to amend registrar policies and conduct a global sweep among them. 860 registrars have already divorced, among them there are many unscrupulous businessmen who even deceive their customers - for example, they intercept their domain names after the expiration date or prevent the client from switching to another competitor registrar. ICANN is currently demonstrating the “flogging” of such unfortunate registrar RegisterFly.com.
According to ICANN, the existing rules governing the operation of registrars were written in those distant times when there were few registrars. For example, in 1997 there was only Network Solutions, which sold domains for $ 50 per year. Now the competition has intensified: the number of registrars is approaching a thousand, and the cost of the domain has dropped to $ 6, and therefore the rules need to be changed.
There are no concrete plans, and now ICANN is considering several options: for example, to introduce some kind of certification of registrars or introduce mandatory approval by ICANN of the change of ownership of any domain, or create a special procedure for the quick and complete cancellation of accreditation of a particular company that has proved its incompetence. All of these issues will be discussed this week at the ICANN meeting in Lisbon.
Currently, ICANN is dealing with the scandalous registrar RegisterFly.com, whose misconduct is described in detail on the dedicated site. Out of a hundred thousand clients of this registrar, several hundred or even thousands lost their domains through the fault of a company that could not renew them (the company ran out of finances, and the director of the company made liposuction for the last money). After months of litigation, ICANN decided to cancel RegisterFly.com accreditation starting next Saturday, March 31, 2007. What will happen to the domains of 100,000 customers later - ICANN explains in the forum . They are planned to transfer domains to another registrar, but due to the many anonymous registrations, this can cause problems.
