China will clean up the Internet

Chinese President Hu Jintao ordered his Chinese Communist Party colleagues to create a “healthier online culture” in the country, Infoworld reports citing Chinese media. According to the Chinese leader, clean internet is the state’s concern.

Hu Jintao met with representatives of the government unit that is studying the Internet, and explained to them the official policy of the country's leadership. The policy is to spread positive information on the Internet about “products that represent great Chinese culture.” The Chinese cannot be allowed to be corrupted due to the corruptive influence of the West.

The speech of the Chinese president took place a day later, after the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) published the latest statistics on the number of Internet users in the country. As of December 31, 2006, the number of Internet users in China amounted to 137 million , an increase of 26 million or 23.4% compared with 2005.

The proportion of Internet users among the population of China increased from last year's 8.5% to 10.5%, for the first time exceeding the threshold of 10%. “This is a very important milestone, meaning that for every ten people in China there is one Internet user,” said Mao Wei, head of the China Internet Information Center (CNNIC). According to him, “a 10 percent share of Internet users will be a turning point in the development of the Internet. After overcoming the 10 percent barrier, the Internet will grow even faster. ”

It is estimated that 75.9% of all Chinese users use a broadband connection, that is, the Chinese Internet has entered a period of rapid development of broadband access - further speeds will only increase.

According to the survey, the average Chinese user’s real Internet costs are 83.5 yuan per month (285 rubles), which is 20.1 yuan (19.4%) less than last year. This means that the Internet in China is becoming more accessible.
