East Asia will remain without a normal connection for another three weeks

Recovering submarine communications cables damaged by the Taipei earthquake in China can take 2 or 3 weeks. According to Chinese media reports, the disaster malfunctioned 4 telecommunications lines, which would cost about $ 6 million to repair. Cables lie on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean about 15 km from the southern tip of Taiwan, Prime-TASS reported .

It will take at least 5 days to fix one cable. To do this, specialists will need to dive to great depths and find damaged sections of highways. After that they will have to lift the cables with the help of hooks on the sides of the vessels and carry out the necessary repairs.

At the same time, Internet access providers will look for alternative routes to restore traffic flow. Recall that without the Internet and international communication after the earthquake, many areas of mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore remained. In Hong Kong in particular, internet connection was completely paralyzed. The largest failure in recent years affected 60-70% of the telecommunications sector in East Asia and showed the vulnerability of submarine cables, ITAR-TASS reports .

Representatives from China Netcom, China’s second-largest telecom company, are reporting that network sharing is extremely slow in Beijing. They say that the disaster damaged the infrastructure linking China and the United States, as well as Southeast Asia and Europe. Now China Netcom, together with American and European operators, establishes communication channels via satellite. Internet communication is also hampered by the fact that users have become more intensively accessing online resources - they are constantly looking on the Web for additional information about what happened.

Seismic activity is common for Taiwan, located in the so-called Pacific “ring of fire” - surrounded by a number of volcanoes and geological fault lines, Vedomosti writesreferring to the Associated Press. In most cases, earthquakes are minor, but there are also very serious disasters. So, in 1999, an earthquake of 7.6 points claimed more than 2,300 lives. During the Taiwan earthquake of 6.7 points on December 26, 2006, 2 people were killed.
