P2P does not affect music sales

A study conducted by specialists of the Journal of Political Economy showed that the level of pirated distribution of musical materials has practically no effect on music sales, contrary to the opinion of numerous representatives of the recording industry.

Ars Technica writes that a study entitled “The Effect of File Sharing on Record Sales: An Empirical Analysis” convincingly (albeit empirically) proves the following: if P2P networks, which are mainly used for illegal file exchange, influence on sales, then no more than 0.7%.

The most popular music, according to the authors of the study, is in demand both in pirate networks and among lovers of licensed music, and no causal relationship between the activities of pirates and a decrease in sales was found.
