Smart Bluetooth swab tells you when it's time to change

One constant female fear is to look down and find blood. Especially in public. My.Flow startup wants to solve this problem once and for all by making the swab another device from the wearable electronics category: on the smartphone screen, the user will see how full the swab is and when it will be time to change it.

If the interlocutors of the Gizmodo journalist say that they would love to use such a gadget at the age of 13, then Dana Wallman with Engadget does not understand who can find this useful. Moreover, from the usual at first glance tampon there is a wire to the device that needs to be mounted on the belt.
Infectious toxic shock (ITS) is a shock condition caused by exo and endotoxins of bacteria or viruses. A gynecological swab with an applicator is one of the reasons for the development of ITS. Wikipedia

The original concept of the “smart swab” included the swab itself, inside which the necessary sensors and electronics were placed. The device itself had to send data to the smartphone via Bluetooth - directly from the inside. But not all women were delighted with the idea of putting electronics of this kind into themselves.

The gadget consisted of an RFduino, a button battery and a holder for it.

The new version of the device is a regular swab with an applicator. The only difference is that a wire of 15 centimeters or more sticks out of the tampon, with the help of which it transfers information to the main unit. That is, there is also the external part of the device, which must be mounted on linen or a belt.

The external unit is like a doorbell.

Information from the sensors is transmitted via Bluetooth to the smartphone. The application, just like the Mi Band shows the remaining battery, shows the fullness of the swab. Over time, it will begin to predict when menstruation will begin, how long it will last, and on which day the bleeding will be the most severe.

The main idea is to help women avoid unpleasant surprises in the form of unexpected menstruation. And also - to help reduce the likelihood of an infectious toxic shock syndrome. The pathogenesis of this dangerous disease is reduced to poisoning the blood with bacterial toxins, and in the case of tampons is caused by Staphylococcus aureus. The disease can lead to death in the first hours - the probability of death is 5-15%.

Someone will agreethat such a device could be useful for young girls who are just starting to use tampons: "Now I do not need such a device, but at 13 it would be useful." And my wife said that women themselves know when the menstruation will begin, and when it is time to change the tampon.

The price of the device will be $ 50 for a Bluetooth module and about $ 13 a month for tampons. Usually in the USA, women spend $ 9-10 a month on tampons, Gizmodo quotes prices.

Journalist Engadgetrecalls another smart device for this purpose - the menstrual cup LoonCup. This intimate hygiene product is a container for collecting secretions and does not absorb them. If they are used according to the instructions, there are no health risks. As with tampons, you just need to change them on time and wash your hands.

The smart cup also reports to the smartphone when it is full. Moreover, she has an RGB sensor - and the device will understand by the color of the discharge when to advise the hostess to go to the doctor. And, of course, the application will predict the onset and duration of menstruation.
