7 useful Firefox extensions for learning English

The other day I published a selection of extensions for Chrome, which I use to "pump over" various English skills. The comments asked for similar material for Firefox add-ons. Since this is my second favorite browser, which I also actively use, it was not difficult to do.

So, here are seven useful extensions that will help improve your writing skills, replenish your vocabulary, and learn how to understand English by ear.

    Linguix

One of the few tools available with the same functionality for both Chrome and Firefox. After installation, the extension will automatically check what you write on sites with a text input field (from Gmail to social networks and blog platforms such as WordPress and Medium).

To correct the errors found, you just need to click on the underlined word / phrase and select the proposed replacement. The service is able to correct errors in punctuation, grammar, and also indicates stylistic flaws. The plus for English learners is that remembering the correct spelling is much easier if you constantly emphasize your incorrect option.

    Linduo

According to the developers, the addon allows you to learn 1000 new English words per month. Learning takes place during the game, during which the user sees illustrations explaining the meaning of the words and can listen to the pronunciation.

Experience points are awarded for each lesson you complete - such gamification encourages you not to abandon classes. From personal experience I can say that if not a thousand words a month, then quite a lot with the help of this extension can really be learned. A definite plus is the Russian-language version of the interface.

    Read aloud

A great option for honing your listening skills. Thanks to the technology of text recognition, with the help of this add-on you can translate any text on the web into audio. And this means that you’ll have to listen not to anyway, but those articles that are of interest to you. You can select the type of voice and set the reading speed. The extension even knows how to work with PDF.

    English Popup Dictionary

A handy dictionary for Firefox Quantum. It works very simply - by double-clicking on a word on the page the translation is displayed.

    ReadSpeaker TextAid

Another tool for translating text to speech. It can be used to convert web pages, Google documents, and Microsoft Word Online pages to audio format. Able to dictate the text that you are printing right now.

    Context wiktionary

A simple addon, but sometimes useful. Helps to quickly find the meaning of a word in the Wiktionary dictionary. The result opens in a new tab.

    Google translate

The hit of the last review is the most convenient extension for Google Translate, as it turns out, there is also for Firefox. It doesn’t work as convenient as the version for Chrome - there the translation was shown right on the page, a new tab with the translator opens here. But you can still save a little time.
