A successful project from the Kickstarter site - LuMini lamp with a light alarm

March 12, 2014, Kickstarter launched a fundraising company to finance the LuMini project. In less than a month on April 1, the necessary amount to start production was collected, and by the final of the company the amount of fees was $ 76,240 dollars. The company involved 1,171 people. In principle, it was enough to raise $ 25,000 to start sales, but with an increase in the budget, additional bonuses were announced in the form of the release of lamps for different socles. In addition to the widespread E26 and E27, when reaching the threshold of $ 37,000, the E14 base was added (a very popular format among small bedside and table lamps), and when reaching the threshold of $ 50,000, a slightly more specific and compact E12 was added. In principle, the E14 format with a small adapter for E27 turned out to be a winning option, it was in this form that I got the dadget.

This is what the packaging of the lamp looks like. Very decent view. Some kind of cardboard is very dense, and inside the base on which the lamp is held generally from cardboard as if made of wood. So the inner holder holds the lamp very well, in the center, preventing it from leaning against the walls of the package. This is true for transportation, especially since the lamp housing is ceramic.

Yes, yes, no cheap plastic painted with silver for aluminum, only real ceramic.

Together with the lamp inside the package, there is an instruction and a transition base under the E27 cartridge. That's basically the whole package.

For the initial tests, I have a part from the old floor lamp, there is just the E14 base, and on it we will check all the lamp modes.

Install the application using the QR code from the package onto the smartphone and turn on the lamp in the network.

After switching on, the lamp lights up in white (well, it’s white according to the instructions), in fact it is a little bluish. The fact is that white diodes have a coolish tint of 3500K. I would honestly have made the shade of the first inclusion at least a little warmer, nevertheless it would have been nicer, and there is an opportunity to control the color.

Well, that’s particular. As the manufacturer promises, this lamp compares favorably with similar ones in that it does not need to be hooked to a special hub that connects to the WiFi network. It was developed in 2014, remember? Now it’s not surprising anyone, the Chinese have already put this technology on stream and every second lamp can cling to the phone via Bluetooth. Although so far the number of lamps with IR remote controls is still large.

We turn to the lamp control. Download the desired application - “Tabulumen” from the Play store or Apple-store and install it on your smartphone.
Then we connect the lamp via Bluetooth and it appears in the list of lamps in the application - everything is simple.

When tap on the lamp, we get into the direct control section:

Everything is intuitive. Click on the color wheel for the desired color - the lamp immediately changes the color of the backlight. Under the circle is a brightness slider, in the brightest position of which the colors are not so saturated, but they shine brighter. In the minimum position, the colors are more vibrant, but the brightness of the lamp is only suitable for backlighting. One of the possible applications is backlighting for photographers, although maybe a 3W LED will not be enough and you need a couple or a little more of these lamps, but you no longer need to spend on backgrounds, and now they are so expensive. One background, for example, costs like 4 such lamps. By the way, I read that a similar lamp from a subsidiary of Xiaomi - yeelight blue does this with a delay, then everything happens instantly. In general, yeelight blue is very similar to this lamp, except that the body is not ceramic but aluminum, everything else is an exact replica. Do not be surprised to know that this project has transformed into Yeelight. In fairness, I note that I tried the application from yeelight in the hope that it will work, nevertheless there is a more modern design, but alas, it did not see the lamp.

The application also knows how to manage a group of lamps, this is a plus. On the kickstarter page, the manufacturer just uses a lamp with six such lamps on the floor lamp.

Regarding the visibility of the lamp by the phone.

In the beginning, I was very bothered that when you exit the application it says that the connection was disconnected, and at the entrance you can see that the lamp is not connected, and you need to tap on the lamp so that it connects. I think that there will be no connection with the lamp, and for example, a call alert will not work. But no, despite this strange behavior, the lamp perfectly informs about the call itself and that you have a missed call.

You can configure notification of an incoming call in the corresponding menu, you can set both a specific color and the blinking frequency.

LuMini can greet you by blinking when your phone appears on the lamp network, for me it is not very important, I rarely go with Bluetooth on all the time.

There are also modes for creating mood:

    Disco.

Select a music track in the lamp application and the lamp adjusts to your track. Playback is from the phone. If you are using an Apple smartphone, it’s very convenient to use Airplay here and send sound to external speakers. Get a full party.

    Flicker.

In this mode, the lamp simply blinks with all the colors of the rainbow at a certain interval. At first it lights up in full with one color, then it gradually goes out and the next one turns on.

    Relaxing light.

In this mode, the light alternates with different colors in warm shades: red, orange, yellow, pink, etc. Under such soft lighting it will be pleasant to spend time at a romantic dinner, the lamp will work almost like a fireplace, pleasantly illuminating the space.

    Pre-sunset sky.

A similar mode to the forward, but the lighting is cold. By the way, in blue lighting they say there is less desire. Therefore, a romantic dinner is no longer suitable. But falling asleep under such a light is like it is. The lamp imitates blue sunset light. Although it does not change as slowly as the sun sets, and who then turns off the lamp if you fall asleep under it?

Since we are talking about a dream, it is worth mentioning the alarm mode. Perhaps you have already read about the smart light alarm clock? We wake up at dawn. The TabuLumi lamp can work on a schedule and turn on by the alarm at a specified time. This feature is phone independent and works even when Bluetooth is turned off. Turning on does not happen immediately at full power, but gradually, as in a smart lamp. True, the first 2 levels somehow still do not smoothly turn on. But then I counted more than 20 steps. An increase in the level of lighting occurs somewhere once a second or a little more. You can specify either turn on white or color. Who likes to wake up under purple?

In the alarm mode, the lamp shines for about 30 or 40 minutes, I still haven’t caught this moment exactly, then it turns off - it’s convenient, you can not think about it and do not turn on the application again in the morning when you are going to work. But the minus is that you can’t set the alarm for the days of the week, for some reason you definitely need to choose dates and no more than 7 days. A strange decision, to be honest.

Well, there is also a mode specifically for friends - such as a color strobe. In this mode, the lamp blinks vigorously with all the colors of the rainbow, conquering your friends and slowly turning them into your slaves like a hypnip. A joke of course, but the most spectacular mode.

The minuses of the lamp include the fact that it works in the standard Bluetooth 4.0, not lower. Although in practice this didn’t work out for me to check, there simply weren’t any smartphones with old blue-toothed chips at home. So it’s like a minus but not for everyone. I will not talk about the price, here everyone already decides for himself whether it is worth it or not. Two years ago, I looked all the way towards Philips lamps, but the price was biting, and besides, they didn’t seem to work directly with smartphones. As a result, he did not take a single one. At that time, I think Lumini would be a worthy competitor, but I didn’t catch my eye. Thanks to the dadget for giving me the opportunity to test it now.

We examined all the functions with a test cartridge, now we turn to the “preferences”. At home, in principle, all the lamp bases are not quite standard. Most Gu10, and there are even more specific ones. What does it say there, and sockets are not the same as everywhere else - universal. When I ordered them, I thought, why not take universal outlets? I often order different gadgets with Aliexpress and e-Bay, and there they often send with a flat plug and an adapter. With an adapter, I really do not like plugs, and flat ones often give additional bonuses, and they are more compact.

In general, with such outlets, and the lack of cartridges, you can finally realize the long-standing idea of a compact lamp like a night lamp, which is directly plugged into the outlet. It is resolved. An hour for modeling, a couple of hours for printing, and we have a ready-made housing for this lamp.

I did not take the cartridge from the donor but bought a new one with an external thread. My fork was lying in the zashashnik. Putting it all together and voila:

Ready smart lamp. It remains to pick up a lampshade from the finished ones on the Thingiverse and print it on a 3-printer. Another three and a half hours of printing time and the lamp takes on a finished look.

Now the order. The wife is incredibly happy and immediately demands to install the application on her smartphone. And when I tested and everything was on a stick, there were only sharp statements about what kind of garbage :)

For those who have access to 3D printing, here is a link to the holder model, though there the end face is designed for a Chinese plug with flat contacts: Link to model .
