Facebook offers employees $ 10,000 to move closer to the office

Facebook employees at Menlo Park’s central office can earn $ 10,000 or more if they move closer to the office. The employer partially compensates for the cost of renting an apartment - and this is a good example for other IT companies.

According to current and former Facebook employees, the company began offering compensation this year.

Under the program, an employee must rent or buy an apartment or house within 16 km of the central campus on One Hacker Way in Menlo Park (48 km south of San Francisco) to receive money.

Some Facebook employees, if they have families and children, may receive $ 15,000 or more in transit as a one-time compensation.

The benefits of Facebook from such programs are not obvious. Probably, the company wants to tie employees to the office more strongly, to stimulate them to spend more time at work, while reducing the cost of a branded bus service that brings employees from San Francisco to the office for free. In addition, the transport connection has worsened recently: the road, which took an hour three years ago, now stretches for an hour and a half.

“If you live closer to work, you take less time to leave at a specific time, and if you work on an exciting task, you will spend more time to complete it,” said developer Mark Shim, who recently moved closer to the office of Addepar and receives compensation for this $ 300 per month.

Similar compensation programs for moving closer to the office are available at some other companies, including Addepar, an investment management IT company, Palantir, a data analysis systems developer, SalesforceIQ software developer (a division of Salesforce.com), and others.

In the vicinity of Menlo Park, there are several poor towns with relatively inexpensive homes. Residents of these towns are now afraid of the invasion of programmers with all the ensuing consequences in the form of higher prices. In Menlo Park itself, rent costs about $ 3,600 per month.
