How we erased the edge of reality
On the 17th anniversary of the company, we decided to break through space and time, erasing the line between reality and fiction in the office. To do this, one could shake the foundations of fundamental physics a little and create, for example, a microscopic black hole ... Fortunately, the positive idea won - to make drawings with a 3D effect. You could see similar images made with colored crayons or spray paints, on city streets, on asphalt. But no one wanted to lay asphalt where people work, so the task was somewhat complicated. And in this post you will learn how to solve it: just created four 3D-Art-prints, which are located in different corners of the main office of Mail.Ru Group in Moscow.
According to all the canons of painting, in order to maintain the correct perspective, a sketch is first made. There is an understanding of the plot, characters and all the basic elements of the picture. However, not all images go beyond this stage - some are eliminated during the implementation process. For example, Darth Vader with the army was not implemented.
Then the illustrator begins to draw on large-format paper, then scans and proceeds to sanding using a graphical editor.
In order to get a three-dimensional picture, you must select the correct position, from which the picture will seem three-dimensional. From all other angles you will see a normal flat image. To select the correct position does not require special software - initially everything is drawn by eye. It is he (the eye) that helps to observe perspective and three-dimensionality.
To make a three-dimensional drawing, you need to photograph the surface on which the art will be located, then open the resulting photo in the editor and add the image that we want to draw in 3D to it.
In the screenshot above you can read the name of the editor used in the work - Cinema 4D . This program has a very simple interface (compared to peers). Importantly, the interface has built-in support for the Russian language. Cinema 4D data can be easily exported to After Effects and vice versa. The main program contains tools for texturing, modeling, rendering and animation. And C4D (an abbreviated version of the name) can work already on three operating systems: Windows, OS X and AmigaOS (yes, it is also updated). :)
To stretch the image and prepare it for gluing, any 3D editor is suitable. That is, we specially draw out a picture so that the person who takes the photo can see it exactly as the artist intended.
Concept image on the 26th floor of the Mail.Ru Group office.
Concept image. In the elevator, we had a hole in the shaft (drawn).
But this illustration hit the gym.
And right in front of the office entrance, trolls crawled out of the bowels of the earth.
In each case, the finished image was printed in the form of stickers, which were then placed in the places reserved for them, not forgetting to indicate the point from which you want to take a photo.
Watch the time lapse of how everything was created, from drawing to happy faces of people - a huge number of non-standard office photos were taken by employees of Mail.Ru Group on their birthday.
Thanks to Zilant Media Studios for creating all the art and implementing the project!
