Universities of Cuba will be connected with fiber

The Internet situation on Freedom Island is not very good now, although it is changing for the better. A few years ago, the Internet was available only for tourists. Now, the authorities are gradually softening the conditions for gaining access for local residents - there are no bans, as before.

Moreover, there are access points in several places. More are planned to be added soon. True, the cost of access, $ 4 per hour, on average, is more than the average local resident can afford. The other day, the Ministry of Higher Education of Cuba announced that since January 2016, the universities of the island will be connected by optical fiber.

Now there is already optical fiber between Bayamo and Siboney, also between Granma and Manzanillo. And they also need to lay optics between Pinar del Rio and the ground-based satellite station (and there are such in Cuba) in Havana.

At the same time, universities are already asking to increase the bandwidth of the channel in order to provide access to the Network for both themselves and students. Campus access points will be installed so that students of Cuban universities will now be able to get involved in networking.

In addition to students, the implementation of Internet technologies in the everyday life of ordinary people is actively carried out. Over the past few years, the government has opened several dozen Internet cafes, launched a national mail service that is available to a million or so local mobile device users. Thus, the Cuban government does not in word but in deed confirms its intention to provide access to the Network for its residents. According to the plan, by 2020, Cuba is going to provide half of households with access to the Network.
