“All-Russian Netflix” worth $ 100,000,000 is being created

The largest Russian telecom operators (Rostelecom, MTS, MegaFon, VimpelCom, Er-Telecom Holding) joined forces with domestic film studios (Prof-Media, STS Media, etc.) for the new mega project - All-Russian online cinema with paid and free films, modeled on Netflix.

In February 2014, a non-profit partnership “Media and Communication Union” was formed to work on the project . The portal should start next year, and the partnership’s management estimates the necessary investments at $ 100 million, Izvestia writes .

The logic is understandable. It is beneficial for providers to ensure that traffic from video services (and this is a good half of all traffic on the Internet) remains in Russia. The profit of domestic film studios is also obvious: in the future online will become one of the main channels for selling licensed content.

From the state point of view, the project is also important. This is cultural security (by analogy with food security, self-sufficiency in a cultural “product”), and fencing off from the corrupting influence of the West, and the possibility of censorship of Western films, and a promising project in terms of the possible isolation of the Russian segment of the Internet, which the authorities mentioned earlier. In light of the foregoing, participants in a “non-profit” partnership can reasonably rely on government investment.

“Independent entry into the online video market requires high costs for companies and will not allow a large audience due to the insufficiently wide content library,” explains Sergey Petrov, President of Media Communication Union, CTC Media Deputy General Director for Broadcast Management (pictured ) - This limits the potential revenue from advertising and subscriptions. The creation of this platform will bring to market a single online platform with a large selection of content from several players. ”

Petrov said that there will be films, series, television shows in the online cinema. It is planned to sell subscriptions and display free films with advertising.

By the way, some members of the Media and Communications Union already have their own online cinemas (Videomore.ru for STS, Zabava.ru for Rostelecom), so a joint project could be done on their basis. It would probably be cheaper than $ 100 million.
