FSB disowned idea to ban anonymizers

The Public Council at the FSB of Russia has denied reports of the development of recommendations restricting freedom on the Internet. This was reported on June 5 by TASS-Telecom.

The Council explained that a variety of opinions were expressed at the meeting on the issue of Internet security, but no specific decisions were made regarding Internet restrictions.

The Council, as stated in the statement, “has never made such proposals, has not made such statements, and has not made any recommendations to the legislature.”

Earlier on May 5, news agencies reported that the Public Council at the FSB had proposed legislatively prohibiting anonymizers and other programs and tools to hide data from Internet users.

Also, as reported, the director of the FSB, Alexander Bortnikov, said that intelligence agencies, security agencies and law enforcement agencies should change their defensive tactics against extremist sites to offensive. “It is necessary to move from the tactics of identifying, fixing and blocking the work of sites used by extremists in their activities, to active information work in cyberspace,” Borovikov said.
