Red Hat takes over CoreOS

Red Hat announced the acquisition of CoreOS, a company familiar to many habrach residents, and occupying a worthy place in the market of container insulation systems and related software. The announced transaction amount is $ 250 million.

Among the projects developing in CoreOS that competed with the solutions of Docker and Red Hat Atomic, we can mention the atomically updated Linux-environment of CoreOS Container Linux (which appeared on the market in 2014 under the name CoreOS). Container Linux introduced the logic of having only the minimum set of components needed to run containers on the OS.

    In addition, among CoreOS products:

    • Quay container image registry (with high reliability and availability of the registry)
    • container management tools rkt (which is positioned as a safer, portable and server-friendly alternative to the Docker toolkit),
    • distributed configuration storage system etcd , a unified mechanism for storing configuration and information about running services for isolated containers with typical filling.
    • Tectonic container orchestration platform (based on Kubernetes),
    • a distributed storage system coordinated via etcd called Torus ,
    • tools for the initial configuration of the Ignition system (providing tools similar to Cloud-Init for configuration of the system at the initial boot stage),
    • Flannel network configurator ,
    • dex authentication service ,
    • a system for analyzing vulnerabilities in the filling of Clair containers (an interesting solution that allows routine checking of containers; the CVE database (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) and information on fixing vulnerabilities in Red Hat Enterprise Linux , Ubuntu, and Debian distributions are used as a data source .

In total, CoreOS supports and develops more than 90 projects, many of which are presented on github . Most of the CoreOS products have evolved as free software, and the missing sources are promised to be open in the coming months. Upon completion of the transaction, Red Hat intends to integrate CoreOS technologies into its OpenShift and Red Hat Atomic products, as well as offer users a number of new products based on CoreOS developments. A plan to create combined products and migrate existing CoreOS customers, including eBay and Salesforce, will be published later.

The Tectonic project, which intersects with Red Hat's proprietary developments related to the OpenShift and Kubernetes platforms, is planned to be used to extend OpenShift functionality in the field of automation of operations and management. The Quay registry is planned to continue to be used as a stand-alone component, as well as to use related developments to improve the Red Hat Container Catalog and registry tools integrated into OpenShift.

Because Container Linux, as well as the rkt and etcd toolkits, intersect with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Atomic Host product, RHEL's platform management tools and runtime for containers. Red Hat intends to create an integrated development team to review, integrate and combine Container Linux technologies with the Atomic project. Container Linux, etcd, and rkt projects were donated to the CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation), an organization developing the Open Container Initiative (OCI) standard , the Kubernetes platform , and runtime containerd .

    • 45.8% Excellent, I expect development of CoreOS projects due to Red Hat 78 reserves
    • 20% Neutral: let them shove their elbows, the market is only better 34
    • 34.1% It is a pity that one competitor in Red Hat (and others) will be less than 58
