Third-party apps that use the Google Hangouts API will stop working after April 25, 2017

When Google launched the Allo and Duo instant messengers, it was said that Hangouts will remain a cross-platform chat for corporate users. And now the time has come for changes to help you follow your course. Update Google Hangouts FAQ reveals the date of disconnection of the API, which will happen at the end of April this year. In fact, this means that any third-party application that integrates with Google Hangouts will stop working for several months.

In addition to updating the FAQ , email notifications were sent to developers using the Hangouts API.

Text of the letter:
“In order to streamline our efforts further, we will be retiring the Google+ Hangouts API that enables developers to build apps for the older version of Hangouts video calls. This API was originally intended to support social scenarios for consumer users as part of Google+, whereas Hangouts is now turning to focus on enterprise use cases.

We understand this will impact developers who have invested in our platform. We have carefully considered this change and believe that it allows us to give our users a more targeted Hangouts desktop video experience going forward. ”

The letter said that the rejection of the Google Hangouts API occurred in order to optimize further efforts to develop this service. This API was originally designed to support social interaction between users as part of the Google+ platform, while Hangouts is now focused on corporate use. They understand that this change will hit developers who have invested in development for their API. But this was a balanced and deliberate decision, and the company believes that this will provide the best video call experience.

According to the FAQ, a few exceptions will nevertheless be made: it will be possible to call Hangouts via DialPad and RingCentral, and also remain integration workers with the corporate Slack service, as well as with the Toolbox, Control Room and Cameraman services.

From the translator: I understand that the translation is of poor quality, but it seemed important to me to convey the news itself, which I read not on Habré / GT, but on a third-party site, to an audience where people may well have their own integration with Hangouts.
