Azure Backup Server - Free DPM

I suddenly found out that Microsoft has released a “free” cloud-based DPM. October 7, only in English, December 2 released a version with support for a bunch of languages (Russian among them). You can download it here . The documentation is here .

    Distinctive features:
“Free” DPM 2012 R2, no need to buy any licenses
“Free” - because you need an Azure subscription and payment for the Azure Backup service
Supports backup of workstations, servers, Hyper-V, Exchange, SharePoint, SQL
Stores 5 days of backups on disk, 180 daily backups in the cloud, up to 10 years of annual backups and a certain number of weekly / monthly
Self-Service recovery from DPM backup is available in this version of the product.

I don’t see much point in reprinting the documentation here, since it is available in Russian. The value of this operation is extremely small. I will cover in detail several points that deserve it.

    1. Installing this solution is, in fact, similar to installing SC DPM 2012 R2 server (it is strongly advised to set to 2012+, associated with traffic optimization). That is, it is further, further, further, with a couple of nuances. You can use only local SQL, which the "installation wizard" will install for \ for you. The documentation says so, select the option new local SQL server. In addition, you need access to the Microsoft Azure and vault credentials file of your Azure Backup storage. Without this step, you cannot install Azure Backup Server.

    2. It is not possible to use only storage in Azure. Azure stores a second backup. Simply put, Azure Backup Server cannot write directly to the cloud. This product cannot write to tape either (artificial limitation, obviously).

    3. The type of store (and, accordingly, price) that you buy in Azure is quite important. At choice: LRS or GRS (3 copies in one TsOD'e or 6 copies in several). These are the settings for a store account in Azure Backup.

    4. You do not need to buy OMS or System Center. Payment takes place for the used space + for protected instances. More details . You don’t need to pay for traffic when working with this product (for many, this information is new, butMicrosoft Azure has not taken money for recovery from backup for a long time ).

    5. This product must be connected to Azure. What will happen if there is no Internet - you can find out in this table:
