Isilon.Next - how Big Data storage has become larger, cloudier and softer *

    * play on words from English. “Software” I

share with you the news that the Isilon storage system continues to unite Big Data, clouds and software-defined storage. On November 10, the long-awaited Data Lake 2.0 was officially announced, aka Isilon.Next.

From the main thing, it is worth paying attention to the following features in the new version of the product:
    • cloud storage can be used as storage tier in Isilon
    • software storage nodes
    • geographically dispersed core-edge cluster architecture
    • full business continuity

Isilon is a storage system specially designed to work with very large amounts of data (from tens of terabytes to tens of petabytes), with speeds of millions of operations per second .

You can read more about Isilon features in these posts.

Isilon Virtual Data solution , as well as a demonstration of its installation and configuration.

    And here's what's new in Isilon.Next:

CloudPools - expanding Isilon distributed storage to the clouds

    • Allows you to work with cloud storage provided by service providers using the S3 protocol
    • Can mount EMC Elastic Cloud Storage object storage as a cloud resource.

IsilonSD is the first fully software version of the Isilon site

    • It can be used to merge into a 6-node Edge cluster.
    • Can connect to the core of the cluster is transparent.
    • It can be either a source for data aggregation, or a target system for its distribution from the kernel.

New OneFS Firmware Version 8.0 with Enhanced Continuous Operations

    • Supports SMB 3, with automatic client reconnection without interruption.
    • Full continuity of operations of the entire complex, including during microcode updates (as well as in the case of rollback).

    Why is this update important?
First, Isilon, who came to IT from the media field, is confidently occupying the corporate clearing of Big Data, where the requirements for continuity of access to information are growing along with their volumes. A system containing Petabytes of data can no longer be so easily stopped for routine maintenance. And batch processing of huge amounts of data requires uninterrupted access even in the event of individual hardware failures. The continuity of the high-speed data access service should be maximized.

Secondly, the confident movement towards the clouds, untying the functionality of the storage system from iron, and providing it in a program form, gives customers more freedom. And it is especially good that this software solution is compatible with the hardware Isilon, which, do not say, has already won a very high level of trust and reliability. That is, Isilon customers get the flexibility of a software solution compatible with the hardware platform.

Thirdly, few doubt that the most economical storage is in the cloud. At the same time, few storage systems can use the clouds as an economical storage tier, like a deep archive. Isilon.Next - Now it can not only store data in the cloud, but makes the clouds part of its automated storage functionality. Moreover, cloud storage technology is not only a saving, but also geographically distributed data protection and continuous access to it . And this is a very serious plus for Petabyte-sized systems.
