Empathy Bokuju

Bokuju went with the student to the temple after a morning walk. A man came up behind, hit him hard on the back with a stick and ran away. Bokuju didn't even turn around; he continued his walk. The student was shocked. He said:

“Why are you not responding?” What's wrong with you? This man hit you so hard, and you didn't even look back!

    Bokuju said,

“This is his problem.” He must be crazy, poor thing. I really sympathize with him. I can’t look back because he is already crazy; my look will make him even more crazy. Arriving home, he may feel guilty, think that I condemn him. No, this is not humane. He is already in trouble. There is no need to create new problems for him.
