In Yandex.Transport appeared Moscow data

Now in the application Y. Transport you can follow Moscow buses, trolleybuses and trams. By launching the application and clicking on the icon of the desired stop, you will see on the map which transport is suitable for it and after how many minutes. And the marks on the map will show where he is at the moment. In total, Yandex.Transport has access to information on 758 bus, 80 trolleybus and 38 tram routes in the capital.

The idea of Transport arose more than three years ago, and we launched it in March 2014. Prior to that, creeping bus tags were included in our mobile Maps as a separate layer and were available in six regions - Kazan, Omsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Perm, Moscow Region and Novosibirsk. Due to the enormous popularity of traffic jams, our Maps of that time were more important for motorists, so the moving vehicle layer in the settings included about a thousand people a month.

There were two ways to explain such a small audience: either users do not need functionality for pedestrians, or they need it, but it is very difficult to find in the interface. To find the answer to this question, we conducted a huge study of human behavior. It turned out that, firstly, there are more than half of pedestrians among Internet users in Russia, and secondly, a third of pedestrians when asked what service they lack for moving around the city answered that they really want to be able to see where now the bus they need is going. So much has been said that the reason for such a small audience is in the interface.

So we still decided to make an application for pedestrians who use public transport. After exiting beta in November 2014, Yandex.Transport was able to show traffic intervals and forecast of arrival at a stop, lists of stops along the route and the geometry of the route on the map for 10 Russian cities, including Moscow.

At the same time, we received Moscow data and debugged its transmission for a long time so that it was stable, tested the quality, and checked whether such an increase in load on our side would be tolerated. According to Russian law, all public transport is equipped with GPS / GLONASS sensors. The sensor from the satellite receives information about the time and coordinates of the vehicle, which are then transmitted by the GPRS modem to the carrier’s server. Here the first losses in signal quality appear: for example, sensors stop working when the bus enters a tunnel, and modems when there is no cellular connection. The data should contain the route number, mode of transport, coordinates, time and identifier of a particular vehicle - so we can process and show them in the application. The data you need is acquired by Yandex, when the partner adjusts the transfer in a certain way. In addition to buses, trolleybuses and trams, Yandex.Transport allows you to monitor minibuses of the Avtoline company, as well as Mostransavto buses near Moscow.

The Yandex.Transport application is available on the App Store and Google Play for Astana, Voronezh, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Kaliningrad, Krasnoyarsk, Lipetsk, Moscow and the Moscow Region, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Perm, St. Petersburg, Chelyabinsk and Cherepovets. In thirty cities, Yandex.Transport operates as a directory of stops and routes.
