Bovanenkovo ​​- organizing communications at gas field No. 3 in Russia with a permafrost BS

    We established communication at the Bovanenkovskoye oil-gas-condensate field (NGCM) in the Yamal region of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area. Down there, under the stations, about 5 trillion cubic meters of gas. And, as is usual in Russia, the place is so deaf that there is really nothing nearby. At all.

    The beginning of the construction of the Earth satellite communications terminal (ZSSS), the piles are deeply driven into permafrost.

    Only in 2011, the departmental railway of the Obskaya station to the facility was commissioned. On a regular basis, helicopters from Nadym and Salekhard fly there, which deliver shifts. There is a river port at the field, and water navigation is open in summer. With all this - the morning may begin with the fact that the outside is -50, but you still need to mount it.

    The relief on the Yamal Peninsula is flat; there were no such difficulties as colleagues had with diamond deposits . If in the case of diamonds the relief is a huge funnel into which you need to “blow out” a signal from a high communication tower, then everything is simpler - just an ordinary lowland. But the problem is in a large area - we needed to cover three geographically spaced objects. Plus, communication with the MSC (switch) is only possible via satellite, otherwise there is no way.

    Such projects are quite expensive and pay off more slowly than in BS in cities, so planning and designing takes a long time, carefully, and we don’t always get the green light for construction. Here we had the opportunity for the first stage to use 2G equipment, which as a result of network modernization (SWAP) was moved from another branch. Reuse of equipment significantly reduced the cost of the project. On the technical side, it is fully functional and will serve for a long time in harsh climates. I think we will continue this practice.

    So, we decided to build 3 base stations, and two of them are connected to the third on the RRL, and about the third is directly installed SSSS, from where the channel goes from our base stations to the satellite (jump into orbit). The channel lands on a satellite hub in Moscow, from where it is routed via trunk optics to the Noyabrsk switch.

    Construction of ZSSS

    Bovanenkovo ​​is a hefty industrial complex with a large residential part as a core and numerous technological sites scattered 10-15 km in the surrounding tundra. The shift is usually a little less than 10 thousand people, all are involved in the industrial development of the field. Base stations are located at three key facilities of the field - at the airport, at the base. At the airport, the antenna system is placed on a monopoly structure on the container (above in the photo). At other base stations, GP-1 and GP-2 were used - the existing antenna mast structures of Gazprom Dobycha Nadym LLC. If they also built their structures as from the “assemble the tower yourself” constructor, it would be unrealistically difficult.

    Beeline will be able to use mobile communications about 10 thousand shift workers in the village of Bovanenkovsky and directly at the field. Basically - gas producers, gas carriers, railway workers (now the northernmost railway in the world passes through Bovanenkovo), as well as employees of contracting organizations.

    At the moment, 2G is working at the stations, a 3G network is being prepared for launch. The current load is about 30 Erlang. In 2G, the existing speed is on the order of 50-70 kbit / s with normal (that is, under these conditions, almost full) cell load. After launching a 3G standard BS, the maximum capacity that will be available to the subscriber will be 8 Mb / s (this is the maximum limited by the channel band). In fact, most likely, if no one downloads torrents, the average speed will be up to 2 Mbps (based on the experience of similar projects).

    Most of the subscribers use phones for calls and access to social networks to communicate with relatives. Given the abundance of entertainment on the territory, traffic on social networks is almost constant.

    A communication feature, like everywhere with a satellite, is ping for more than a second. Pages load quickly, but not immediately, if they require many small requests, but photos and music open at a completely normal speed.

    Technical support and maintenance at such distant facilities is an eternal complication. In the event of a complex breakdown, it is necessary to deliver the spare part together with the engineer by helicopter. In case of smaller problems, remote access and an “enicsheik” in place are enough. Therefore, we solve the problems by the communications engineers on the spot when you need to do something with your hands.


    Firstly, everything stands on permafrost. When carrying out work on the installation of structures in the ground and on the ground, a peculiar approach . This is not the first experience of construction in such conditions , we usually use SDAs or are mounted on special poles. The experience gained in Bovanenkovo ​​is perhaps the most valuable and hardest to get.

    The climate here is complicated. The Arctic is generally not always happy with daylight - daylight hours are 3-4 hours a day in winter. In autumn and spring, another misfortune is foggy weather, and the fog is so dense that flights of planes and helicopters are forbidden. Blurs the roads in the summer, but there is the opportunity to travel by water. In general, a complete set.

    Interestingly, even in such cold conditions, the issue of cooling is relevant. On the BS are air conditioners such as complex split systems with winter sets. The room under the BS is a container that is placed at the base of the high-rise support, a feeder emerges from it, rises through the antenna-mast structures and connects to the antenna. In our project in two positions we use ready-made premises.

    In such projects, we use equipment that can work in the harsh climatic conditions of Russia.

    Container hardware. This is one of the options for installing a mobile BS, i.e. if you wish, you can always move the container without special difficulties to another place. We could not deliver slabs, build a base, etc. To create a kind of foundation, we loaded the metal into the container, delivered it to the installation point, assembled it in place in the form of such sleds on which the container was mounted. Naturally, the design is fixed and will not go anywhere.

    There were difficulties in the construction of the ZSSS, and equipment failure after installation (there was a long replacement along the entire chain), but we met our deadlines.

    In general terms: there is nothing supernatural in the construction and launch of these facilities. Logistics difficulties, permafrost, frost, etc. - This is a normal occurrence for our region. In general, the northern territories are not an easy pleasure, and it is good that the necessary towers here were already existing. If we built ourselves (as we often do at other, more complex engineering facilities), then there can be difficulties at all stages, from excavation to construction work.

    The plans for the further development of the North include the construction of base stations in the Sabetta and Tambey regions in eastern Yamal, where a promising development of a gas field is also underway. Most likely, these are Messoyakha, Sabetta, Payuta, Nurma-Yakha and other enterprises of the region. Our installations are relatively frequent, but each launch is a new experience and a small victory.
