Nokia and SEL Introduce New Type of Flexible OLED Displays

Many companies are working to create reliable flexible displays that could be used in many industries, as well as in consumer electronic devices. Circular bracelets, phones that are not afraid of falling, flexible panels for presentations - all this will become possible if any of the existing prototypes goes into the stage of industrial production.

Perhaps this day is near. The other day, Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) and Nokia presented their version of this type of displays at the academic conference on display technologies, SID 2014 (June 1-6, 2014, San Diego, USA).

Partners introduced two types of displays. The first bends in half, like a book. The second - bends in two places. Both prototypes are 5.9-inch flexible OLED panels with unfolded state. Resolution - 1280 * 720 and 249 pixels, respectively.

In the manufacture of displays, a WTC structure was used, where OLED and a color filter are combined. All these layers are located between two insulating layers, such as a sandwich. You can bend panels repeatedly, up to 100 thousand times, which is quite enough for any device.
